Year 1 Christmas Party

Published Thursday, December 15, 2011.
Last updated: Thursday, December 15, 2011

The children had a great day today, taking part in many different activities with teachers they do not normally spend time with. The four classes at our end of the corridor went down to spend the morning doing the planned Christmas activities in the classrooms at the other end and all of those children came up to our end. It was great fun!

The children made:

  • a Father Christmas
  • a Snowman
  • a Reindeer
  • an Angel

Once the rotation of activities was over, the children got ready for their party day lunch - which was a real feast of delicious food items brought in by the children as well as some provided by the kitchens at Patana. It must have been good, because the children revisited the food tables many times over the course of their lunch!

After lunch came the multi-cineplex and popcorn afternoon. The children had pre-chosen the films that they would like to watch and disappeared off to those classrooms to enjoy their choice. While they were there, their popcorn was delivered and they enjoyed munching on it while they sat and watched their movie.

What we are all waiting for now, is the arrival of Father Christmas in our Assembly tomorrow (Friday) morning, between 08:00 ans 09:00 - everyone is welcome to come and find out for themselves, if they are free!

Capacity Learning - with water!

Published Wednesday, December 14, 2011.
Last updated: Wednesday, December 14, 2011

The children used their learning from last week to predict and then measure to find out which container held the most water and which one held the least. First of all, they chose some containers and put them into the order of size they thought was correct.

They also had to record their thoughts and ideas using a chart to see how close their initial predictions were to the final results once they had checked everything through. To find things out, we used the same cup to make sure we were doing it fairly and worked together to ensure that we counted everything correctly.

The children were very good with their predicting and a lot of them were very close (and in some cases correct). After the investigation the children shared their experiences with their Talk Partner and decided that it was not as easy as it looked as they could not be sure how many cups it was going to take to fill the containers thay had chosen. They had, however, remembered the word "Capacity" and what it meant - very simply, to fill a container with either something solid (like cubes) or liquid (like water).

Well done 1S! :-)

Capacity Learning

The children in 1S were challenged by ERIC today to see if they could work in teams to find out which container had the greater capacity. First of all they had to decide on a container that they wanted to test. Then they had to put their containers in the order they all thought would be the right one - talking with each other to ensure that they all agreed with the choices. The following photo was their prediction:

The next job was to fill their container with cubes and then count how many it held. This was a big job for some of the pairs! Once we had counted all of the cubes, the children had to put the empty containers into the order of how many cubes they held and then we took another photo.

Comparing the two photos allowed the children to decide how accurate their predictions were. Have a look and see how clever they were!!

Well done 1S - great job!

1S at the King's Birthday Assembly

Published Thursday, December 01, 2011.
Last updated: Thursday, December 01, 2011

The children enjoyed the special assembly we attended this morning, which was held in honour of His Majesty the King's 84th birthday. There was plenty for them to watch and to listen to, with the finale being very impressive indeed. They witnessed a wonderful shadow play, which finished with the actors and actresses creating a shadow picture of the King - absolutely amazing. As the children were walking back to the classroom afterwards they were all saying how much they had enjoyed the Assembly, which was wonderful to hear.

I really enjoyed the assembly and the part I most liked was the shadow dance.
Long Live The King.

Wow your assembly looked super! We were just wondering if the King went too and if he had a good day?
