Year 1 Swimming Gala

Published Thursday, May 27, 2010.

Dear 1S Parents,

Many thanks for coming along this morning to our Year 1 Swimming Gala. Although we had a rather wet start, the children were very patient and when they were finally allowed to start, they were wonderful to watch! I hope you all had as much fun as I did!!

:)

As always, I became too involved with what the children were doing and just managed to take photos before they started their events. Therefore, if any parents have any shots of the morning available that they would be happy to email to me, then I would be most grateful.

The ones I did manage to get are below - enjoy!

Kind regards,

Mr. M.

Can you see the tallest shadow, the shortest one, the widest one, the narrowest and the smallest one? Did you make your shadows using the same body shapes?

Year 1 Activities for Friday 21st May

Dear Parents,

Please continue to use the activities that we have posted on the Year 1 website over the past few days – all of which are linked to the curriculum and are what we would have been learning about at school. We hope that you and your children have enjoyed having a go at many of them and we look forward to being able to share everything that has been done when we see everyone again next week.

Take care and have a safe and peaceful weekend.

Kind regards,

The Year 1 Team.

Work for Thursday and Friday (20th and 21st May)

Published Thursday, May 20, 2010.

Dear 1S Parents,

Please find copied below the entry that is also posted on the main Year 1 website. I hope that you enjoy doing some of the activities that we have suggested - all of which are linked to the areas of learning we would have been doing at school this week. As mentioned below, there are many suggested activities and I do not expect you to have a go at all of them. They are to be treated like a menu in a restaurant - have a go at as many as you can, but choose the ones that interest you the most!

Unfortunately, the links in this blog do not seem to be working, so you will need to log on to the Year 1 webpage via the Patana home page and go through the Student icon found there - my apologies!

I wish you all a safe few days and I look forward to seeing everyone when we return to school.

Kind regards,

Mr. M.

Year 1 Activities for Thursday 20th May and Friday 21st May

Dear Parents,

With the school being closed for the next two days, Thursday 20th and Friday 21st May, the Year 1 Team have put together some further activities so that the children can continue with their learning until we hopefully see them all again on Monday 24th May. All of the following activities are linked directly to the curriculum we would have been following this week. However, please do not feel as if you need to get the children to do all of them, as we have put plenty choice (both in this entry and the previous ones we have posted this week and last week) for them to work from for the next few days. It would be great if the children picked out activities that they will enjoy doing and then brought the work into school to show everyone once we are back.

To help with their phonics, the websites below are excellent. Some of them also have sheets that can be printed off so that the children can practice their handwriting.

(Update regarding websites listed on this post – 16:30 Thursday 20.05.10. It seems that some parents and children have had problems opening some of the links we had suggested. The problems were to do with the links to Word documents, as the PDF ones seem to be working. Our apologies for this – these links have now been removed)

As a part of our Fantasy Topic, the children might like to think about setting a story on a “Monster Island”.

On this island there are monsters with:

1 leg called - uniplods

2 legs called - duoplods

3 legs called - triplods

4 legs called - quadroplods

5 legs called - pentaplods

It would be great if the children could design a poster or a brochure to tell their friends about all of the things that they would find on their “Monster Island”. Make sure that they write and talk about all of the different types of monsters that might be there – what the monsters are like, where they live and what they do.

Please can the children then draw these strange creatures in their brochure? Maybe they are spotted, or striped, colourful or camouflaged. We can't wait to hear all about their adventures on “Monster Island”!

If you have any good fantasy books at home the children could draw a story map of their favourite one – ensuring that all of the events appear in the correct sequence. Make sure that they decide what the main aspects of the story are and include them in their plan. If they need to make some notes on their map to help them tell the story to their friends, make sure that the illustrations are annotated (labelled and written about) as well.

Linking to our number work at the moment (word problems) get the children to think about making up some number problem questions about the monsters they have created for their “Monster Island”. For example, “If there are 3 duoplods and 2 uniplods how many legs are there altogether?” If they are unsure about making up some questions of their own, you could create some for them to answer – sometimes using both ‘+’ and ‘-‘ in the same word problem. Have fun!

We will talk to the children once we are back at school (as we did on Tuesday morning) about what they have done and then look at what they have been learning and working on while they were at home. Please check the school website before Monday 24th May for further updates and information. Hopefully we will see you all next week. Once more, thank you for all of your support with your children’s learning at home, it is very much appreciated

Please take care and stay safe – we look forward to seeing everybody soon.

Kind regards,

The Year 1 Team.

Dear 1S Parents,

I hope to see you all soon.

Kind regards,

Mr. M.

Year 1 Activities - Wednesday 19th May

Dear Parents,

With the School being closed today (Wednesday 19th May), due to the current political situation, it would be great if you could please continue to work on the activities that have been placed on the Year 1 webpage over the past few days, as these are areas that we would have been learning about at school. These are the activities and ideas listed for Last Friday (the 14th May) and this Monday (the 17th May). Please also refer to the Year 1 Newsletters, either the hard copy version or the online version, from the past two weeks (wb 10th and 17th May) for other possible ideas linked to the work that we are doing at the moment.

Here are a few extra activities to add to the ones already listed:

When reading, can the children become “Sound Detectives” and find all of the different sounds they have been learning in class? How many can you find in one book?

When they have finished reading a book, instead of the grown up asking the questions, see if the children can ask any about the book for others to answer. Remember to remind the children to use the question words at the beginning – why, where, when, who what and how. Some children may need some initial help to think of questions to ask and you can model how to look for information and then ask a question about it. With a little help they should get the idea. This is another good way for them to show their comprehension of the text.

In Science, we have been looking at how shadows are formed when light source is blocked. If it is a sunny day, the children can go outside and experiment with their own shadow. Can they make it as tall as they can, as short as they can, as wide as they can, as narrow as they can? Can they hide it all together? Is this possible? Can they place their foot onto their own shadow’s head? If you could take some photos of these activities and write about what you find out then we can share the discoveries when the children come back to school.

In Maths we are looking at number riddles and shape word questions. For example, what is the answer to 2+3+5-4=? Give the children different examples of number strings to work out and then talk about how they did it. It is important for them to understand the method and the organisation needed to work out more complex questions. If the children find these riddles easy, then try some with larger numbers and see how they go! They can use any practical equipment to help them, or they can write things down if that is better for them

For the shape word questions the children have to use their knowledge of the properties of 2D and 3D shape to work out the answers to the questions. Once they are happy with answering questions they can then move on to writing their own for others to answer. Please discuss what they have done at each stage to make sure that their understanding of the process is clear and the method that they use is working properly. An example of the sort of question they can answer is: “If there are 3 triangles and 2 squares, how many side are there all together?” or “If there are 5 triangles and you take 1 triangle away, how many corners will there be?”

If you have something that you would like to be posted on your class blog, about what you have been doing at home, please log on and write a comment – it would be lovely to be able to share these once we are back at school.

Sadly, the Year 1 Swimming Gala has had to be postponed and we hope that it will be rearranged for another date in the not too distant future.

We will talk to the children once we are back at school (as we did on Tuesday morning) and look at what they have done while they were at home. Please check the school website before Thursday 20th May for further updates and information. Thank you for all of your support with your children’s learning at home, it is very much appreciated.

Please take care and stay safe – we look forward to seeing everybody soon.

Kind regards,

The Year 1 Team.
