Year 1 Activities - Monday 17th May
Dear Parents,
With the School being closed today (Monday 17th May), due to the current political situation, we have listed some further activities below that you might like to do with your children. They are all linked in some way to the work being covered in Year 1 this week. If there are activities from Friday that you would still like to do, please feel free to use them as well.
We will talk to the children once we are back at school and look at what they have done while they were at home. Please check the school website before Tuesday 18th May for further updates and information.
Please continue to read with your children – any books that they would like to read or share will be wonderful. Once you have read, it would be great if you could talk to them about their understanding of what the book is about.

Can the children think of some amazing fantasy settings? (This can follow on from the work they may have already done with their 3D junk model and picture of an alien). Draw a fantasy setting with lots of detail and write a simple description of what you can find in it. Make sure that you use lots of ‘wow’ words and connectives to make your writing interesting. You will need to be able to describe your setting to your friends when you come back to school.
These will then be used as a story setting for the children’s work in our lessons later on in the week.

For PE, it would be great if the children could go for a swim, especially as we have our Swimming Gala coming up this Wednesday. They can practise their strokes as well as their diving and swimming underwater skills! If you have a safe area of grass nearby, the children could play with a ball, ride a bike or a scooter and use any climbing equipment that might be available.
In Science, we are continuing to learn about light and dark. Get the children to have a look around the house and find all of the sources of light they can discover. Have them record what they find out by drawing and labelling pictures. Do they know the difference between natural light and a light source that is man-made? Discuss the difference between the two.
Get the children to “play” with their shadow and those of other objects they can find. Talk about what happens to the shadows as the objects are moved. How can you make the shadow smaller, bigger, taller, narrower, shorter, wider etc?

The children could also draw or paint some shape pictures, using the 2D shapes: square, triangle, rectangle (oblong), oval, circle, pentagon, hexagon – see if they can try and use as many different 2D shapes as possible! If they wanted to, they could make the pictures out of plasticine or playdough – take a photo of their work and email it to school!
