Tuff Spot - Learning through Play
The children have been learning all about instructions recently - how to give them and how to follow them! The children have learnt that the "bossy" words are the ones that tell them what to do and the sequential words are the ones which put the instructions in the correct order for a task to be successfully completed.
They have learnt to follow them by being careful and listening to what they needed to do while they were at the market and they have learnt how to write them when thinking about the instructions they needed to have to make their fruits salads and monsters.
Over the past few days, they have been making imaginative worlds with our "Tuff Spot". This is a raised tray in which lots of wonderful and exciting activities take place. Very often, they will use equipment that has been provided for them but this time we ensured that the choices they made were theirs and theirs alone.
Firstly, there were instructions on how to make certain environments which needed to be read and followed. After that there were photos and pictures for the children to possibly take their ideas from and finally they could make a scene from their own imaginations. It was fantastic to see the children take charge of their own learning and work together to make something magical. The language they used was excellent and showed that they had a good grasp of the ways in which instructions could be used and how they made playing a game more enjoyable because everyone knew what the 'rules' were.
I am looking forward to seeing how this develops over the coming weeks. Please enjoy some of the photos of the children making and playing with their imaginative creations.
