Celebration of Us
Today has been our 'Celebration of Us' day. We have had a fantastic time visiting a different country in each Y2 classroom, learning facts and trying new things organised for us by the parents.
Our first stop was the USA. We each made a flag, making sure we had the correct number of stars and stripes.
Q. Do you know how many stars and stripes the American flag has? And why?

A. There are 50 stars - one for each state; and 13 stripes - one for each of the original colonies.
Next we visited Italy. Here we looked at pictures of famous places and buildings, and talked about all the yummy food we like to eat which comes from Italy. We made masks and pasta.
Q. Which city in Italy is famous for its masks?

A. Venice
Our next stop was Scotland. Here we learned about some different inventions that Scotland is famous for. We made telephones and practised our putting skills.
Q. Which Scotsman invented the telephone?

A. Alexander Graham Bell
Travelling on, we arrived in Australia, learning about the aborigines and Captain Cook. Here we made aboriginal paintings and learned some of the local language.
Q. What is a barbie, a mozzie and a roo?

A. A barbecue, a mosquito and a kangaroo.
Next up, we arrived in Ireland. We learned about Irish dancing and practised some dance moves.
Q. What is the symbol of Ireland?
A. The shamrock
Our next destination was Sweden. It was here that we learned about the northern lights and the midnight Sun. We made snowflakes and made the Swedish flag.
Q. Which Swedish pop group is famous for hits such as Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia?

A. ABBA
Our journey ended in Greece. Here we learned about the origins of the Olympics and about the Greek gods. We learned a Greek dance and practised our throwing skills.
Q. What is the name of the famous Greek Dance?

A. Zorba’s Dance
How much have you remembered?
I have had a fantastic day today and learned a lot about the USA, Italy, Scotland, Australia, Ireland, Sweden and Greece. Our class parents did a great job. Thank you!
What did you learn today? What did you enjoy the most? Will you try one of the activities at home?
