Explanations

Tell me why

Write explanations to answer some of these questions. You may answer them in any order you wish.

  • Why do you wipe your feet before you come into the house? People wipe their feet before going into a house so that...

  • Why do you wear a hat, gloves and a scarf in the winter?
  • In winter, lots of people wear...because...

  • Why do people borrow books from a library?
  • People borrow books in order to....

  • Why do you use a knife and fork to eat?
  • It is easier to use a knife and fork to eat because...However...

  • Why/How do people recycle?
  • Why are there pictures in children’s books?
  • Lots of children's books have picture in to...

  • Why do houses have windows?
  • Houses have windows to allow...

  • Why do we wear shoes?
  • If people did not wear shoes they would...

  • Why do people live in houses?
  • Why are dictionaries in alphabetical order?
  • What should you do if you’re lost?
  • How does a pencil work?
  • Pencils have...

  • How do you tell the time?
  • How do you make a pond?
  • First the gardener chooses a suitable place for the pond.  It is important that it is....because...

  • How does a bicycle work?
  • Why do cars have registration plates?

Some of the questions seem really easy to answer but if you think about things carefully you’ll find that the answer can be quite detailed and complicated.

Don’t just tell me the answers to the questions. Try and work in some more information and detail about the subject as well.

After you’ve answered a few of the questions above then you may think of your own.

e.g.

Why do people live in houses?

People live in houses so that they can shelter from the cold or the rain.  In other places in the world, people need shelter from the heat and the sun.

A long time ago people often lived in cave homes.  However, many people found that these were cold and damp and so they did not live in them all of the time.  Houses are much better than cave homes because they have windows to let the light in and they are easier to keep clean.

Can you use causal connectives?

Can you write in the present tense?

Try to write using the third person.  This means writing about the topic name and not using words like "I" "we" or "you".  If you are writing about how to do something, write "People..." or "Children" instead of "you".  Remember an explanation is different to writing instructions.
