What a Buzz: Another exciting Year 5 Readers' Cup competition!

Published Friday, June 20, 2014.
Last updated: Friday, June 20, 2014

The 2nd annual Year 5 Readers’ Cup grand final was held Wednesday in the theatre amidst much excitement and enthusiasm for books and reading.

Following a semi-final round last week, one team from each class was chosen to compete in the finals. The competition was fierce!  It was a tense atmosphere as the teams worked together to use their reading skills to answer questions on each of the books in 3 quiz rounds.  Perhaps the most exciting and nerve-wracking round was the ‘Buzzer Bonanza’ where students had to to buzz in via an I-Pad app to answer questions. There was also a lot of audience participation in this round, which allowed all the students to take part in the quiz by ‘stealing’ or ‘saving’ points for their class team.

By the end, the quiz scores were incredibly close and two teams were tied for 1st place.  This was a true testament to how much effort was put forth and how much reading was done by all the teams.  A tie-breaker round was needed but when all was said and done the competition ended with a joint 1st place finish. 5R and 5H are this year’s Year 5 Reading Champions!

The quiz competition may be over now but the hope is that the excitement of reading and sharing fantastic books will long continue!

Patana Primary Power-writers!

Published Friday, June 20, 2014.
Last updated: Friday, June 20, 2014

In November last year, 6 Primary Patana students set off on a most challenging task- to write a novel within one month! This event, known as NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is a fun writing event where the challenge is to complete an entire novel in just 30 days. For one month, children have to lock away their inner editor, let their imagination take over, and just create!

Participants set reasonable, yet challenging, individual word-count goals (some of our children wrote up to 5,000 words) and begin writing November 1st and must finish by midnight, November 30th.  Every child that reaches their word count goal, within the time frame, is entitled to get their book professionally published.

Our Patana students wrote on topics ranging from sea creatures, children saving the world and talking animals to spy agents, time travelling and candy Queens.  This week they had their official book launches in the library, where they read extracts from their novels and signed books for their adoring fans.

The 6 novels written by: Natasha 6M, Duncan 6S, Te 6S, Savannah 4M, Calista 4D and Amanda 3B  can be found in the Primary library for you to enjoy.

Congratulations authors!

Y6 Book Talks

Published Wednesday, February 05, 2014.
Last updated: Monday, April 21, 2014

Hello Year 6,

I have very much enjoyed your Book Talks so far this year. If yours is still to come here are some helpful hints and videos.

Book Talks have four parts:

The Hook: A creative introduction which hooks the listeners in.

Make this interesting! Think props, drama, questions, cool facts etc.

The Book: A comprehensive summary of the book which does not give away the ending.

This should be in your own words. Don't just read the blurb!

The Look: A shared passage from the book

Make sure to 'set this up': what is happening at this point in the book and why have you chosen this part. This shouldn't be too long; just a good 'taste'.

The Took: Opinions and Recommendations

Why did you choose this book for your talk? What is your opinion of it? Who would you recommend it to and why?

Below are videos of two very good Book Talks from Term 1. Notice how the students have used the rubric to help them plan out their talks.

Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas.

What super job on our 'Give a Gift of a Book for Christmas' collection - we have collected over 1500 books. We are so thrilled by your kindness and generosity and thank you enormously.

Students - keep reading and sending in the reviews for the Secondary House Reading Competitition. Samui are catching Phuket up fast so your review could make all the difference to who the final house champions are!

Have a wonderful holiday.
