Week beginning 23rd January 2012
Last week, we highlighted the sense of hearing. The children talked about their ears and what they can do. They became more aware of the sounds all around us. It was much quieter in the classrooms when we turned the air conditioning off! If we listened very carefully we could hear birds singing, children playing, water running in the bathrooms and Mrs. Ishanti playing her guitar! Some of the children played listening games and successfully identified animal noises and environmental sounds. We are encouraging the children to become ‘active listeners’.
The K1 children are busy preparing for ‘Sports Day’ on Thursday 23rd February. There will be more details to follow. We hope that you can join us to see all of the skills your children are developing both individually and collaboratively.

Week beginning 16th January 2012
Last week, we highlighted the sense of smell. The children were able to talk about ‘noses’ and how they could use them to smell as well as breathe. Intrigued by the pots covered with tissue, some of the children happily took a risk and smelt them to see if they could identify what was inside. Cocoa powder was a favourite, whereas the pot containing onion was not and when the pot was passed around, some of the children’s expressions changed! It was not a smell they liked. This was a very language rich activity with the children beginning to hear and use new vocabulary. Next time your child peels an orange or a tangerine, encourage them to think about the smell and how they would describe it. Meal times are the perfect opportunity to talk about the smells around us. The smell of chocolate cookies coming from the Foundation Stage kitchen was wonderful. The children of K1R had been busy baking! Cooking in K1 is a fantastic learning experience that includes all of our six areas of learning.
We hope you enjoy our pictures!

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Nursery and K1 ‘Chinese New Year Open Morning’ last Friday; thank you for coming. The children were delighted to be able to share our learning environment with you. It was a very special atmosphere, with animated and enthusiastic children and adults participating in a variety of learning experiences.
