K1: We Play! We Think! We Learn!

Week beginning 5th March 2012

The smell of ‘Gingerbread’ cooking wafted through the block this week, as the children made their own gingerbread men biscuits. Wearing their chefs’ aprons, the K1 children purchased their ingredients from the K1 market stall before rolling out the dough and using the cutter to make the body. The children used their knowledge of the story to help them give their Gingerbread man "Two raisins for his eyes, one currant for his nose, some peel for his mouth and three cherries for buttons". These Gingerbread men did not get chance to "run away" as they were quickly eaten by the children at lunchtime on Friday! During this learning experience, the children were developing mathematical, physical and language skills. Sorry you did not get chance to have a taste. The children would love to show you how they made them at home too!

Last week, the children enjoyed exploring the world of ICT by using the iPads. Within small focused groups, the children explored making their own Gingerbread men, linked to the story, which they had been sharing in their classes. It was wonderful to see the children turn taking and working together, during this language rich activity.

The children continue to be encouraged to think about taking care of our resources. Last week, they were learning to handle them carefully and to return them to the correct place when they were no longer being used. The children enjoyed receiving stickers from the teachers and teaching assistants for their kindness and willingness to help.

Looking after our world is also so important. At our Nursery and K1 Assembly, the rapping group, the 3R’s came along to share their special story. Mrs. Reduce (Ms. Ali) Mr Reuse (Mr Jay) and Mrs. Recycle (Ms. Jess) told their story about how we can help to keep our world beautiful. K1 and Nursery had some lovely ideas about how they can help!  The children enjoyed making their own dances and actions to the 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ song by Jack Johnson and we will continue to encourage them to think about the part they can play in looking after our environment.

After drinking their milk in the K1 café, the children are now removing the silver foil, and carefully washing out their own bottles so that they can be taken to our recycling point on our campus. It would be great if you could also bring things to recycle from home, and drop them off with your children at the recycling centre too; talking to them about why this helps us look after our environment. Many thanks for your support.

Mrs. Sarah, Mrs.Judith and Miss Jess
