Last updated: Monday, October 31, 2011

Good morning 6L,

I hope that you all had a good weekend and are safe and well. I am still in Bangna and I am pleased to report that my swimming skills are not being put to the test! I hope that you haven't been too badly effected by the worsening floods of this weekend. I have been very pleased to have emails from those of you who have ventured out of Bangkok, I know some of you have gone to Singapore, India, Phuket, Pattaya amongst others. I look forward to hearing your stories when we get back.

As well as an update to your home learning, below are details of the residential T shirt design competition.

Have fun,

Miss Laird

Literacy Home Learning

Today's 'Exciting Writing' task is to produce a piece of descriptive writing. Choose one of the three pictures 1, 2, 3 and describe it using the description checklist which you can view below. Use your senses to help you - if you were there what could you see, smell, hear, taste and touch? Be sure to include lots of wow words and make your description interesting in order to entertain the reader (me). Who knows, some of these may be shared in your classrooms or be put up on display so be sure to produce something that you are proud of.

Please include:
- Adventurous adjectives
- Superb similes
- Marvellous metaphors
- Awesome alliteration
- Priceless personification
- Cool connectives
- Outstanding openers
- Premium punctuation

Self-assess your piece of writing and also get somebody else to give you some feedback.

Good morning 6L, I hope that you are safe and well, and that the home learning activities are keeping you out of trouble.  Thanks to all of you who have emailed your work, I'm pleased to see how some of you have adapted it to link to the current situation.

The next set of home learning activities will be maths based and will be set by your Maths teacher using MyMaths.  I know some of you are familiar with it from Y5 but your maths teacher will still email you your username and passwords before Monday, just in case.  If you have any problems accessing it on Monday, please email me or your maths teacher.  Once you have completed the tasks set by your Maths teacher, feel free to use the site to help you revise any other areas of Maths that you need some practise with.

Please stay safe, look after each other and I look forward to hearing about what you have been up to.

Miss Laird

Home Learning 26.10.11

Published Wednesday, October 26, 2011.
Last updated: Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Hello Everybody,

I hope you are all well and your families are keeping safe from the flooding.

I realise that you may be very busy or away from Bangkok depending on your own personal circumstances and I understand that these will take piority over school work.  However, school remains important and so home learning will be posted on the main Y6 page or on the 6L blog while school is closed.  The first home learning, posted yesterday asked you to do an additional 2 or 3 activities from the Moving People home learning matrix over the next few days.

The choices below are from the matrix and have been slightly adapted so that they relate to the curent flooding situation in Bangkok. Learning is much deeper if it is about something you have experienced in real life. However, you don't have to choose from these:

  • Write a set of instructions aimed at preparing people for a flood.
  • Imagine you are a child who has been evacuated from home during a flood. Write a poem describing the experiences you are having and the emotions you are feeling.
  • Write a newspaper report about the flooding that has happened in Bangkok.
  • Create a piece of art named 'The Flood'
  • Design a board game with a Flood theme.
  • Design an invention that will help people in the floods.

On Monday 31st October, you will have MyMaths activities to complete and again on Thursday 3rd November. Your Maths teacher will let you know your individual login details and password by Monday. If you can't access this, please email your Maths teacher or myself and we will try to help.

The school MyMaths login is:

login: bangpat

password: square

We will also be posting additional learning tasks on the Year 6 blog and the class blog on the above dates.

Thank you,

Miss Laird

PS Any questions - please ask on the blog or email me.
