Primary Aquathlon
Primary Aquathlon’s enjoy near perfect conditions in the pool and on the track
This has been an action packed week for Primary PE which started with the Aquathlon on Monday and Tuesday. This is my first year at Patana School and I must say that it was an absolute joy to see so many students getting involved in such a fun and active event! All students have been working very hard in their PE and Swimming lessons and this was a great opportunity for them to show how much they have learnt. In perfect weather conditions the students took to the pool with great enthusiasm and excitement.

Students work in pairs for the event and are expected to complete a distance swim followed by a run. Whilst one student is competing their partner helps them by recording distances, helping them change from their swimming kit to their running kit and generally cheering them on. It was fantastic to see how much encouragement the students were giving each other and there was a great atmosphere in all of the year group events.
The emphasis of the event is on enjoyment and this was clear to see as you looked around at the students’ faces. It was particularly thrilling to see the year 3 students who, like me, were attempting their first Aquathlon, looks of anticipation soon turned to excitement and determination. Many of the students had set themselves personal goals like swimming a particular stroke or running an extra lap, it was great to see the pride and elation in their faces as they accomplished these. A particular mention should go to the year 5 and 6 students who entered the competitive event, which took part in the 50m pool. Students were given an overall time for the event which meant that there was a very different atmosphere at the poolside as they discussed tactics and the best ways to improve their times.
Although all students did a great job there are some names that we would like to mention.....
Year 6 – Albert Smutharaks, Jason Griffin, Karatae Uahwatanasakul and Isabelle Dye
Year 5 – Sammy Wright, Lorenzo Prada, Pawarapa Osathanugrah, Ethan Abai Haddon and Eloise Dooley,
Year 4 – Lorcan Moore, Khalid Al Khayat, Jessica Montgomery Day and Jayden Da Ros
Year 3 – Luke Abai Haddon, Moniqa Neilson and all the Year 3 teaching staff (4 entries, well done!)
Finally, a big thank you to those parents and staff that came to support the students, especially those that took part. I’m sure, that like me, you were inspired and proud of what you saw. Only 51 weeks to go to next year’s Aquathlon so let’s ALL start training!

Fun Run
Patana Fun Runners
On Saturday 26th September 20 of our most enthusiastic runners took part in the ISB Under 11, 1 KM Fun Run. It was an early start for the students, who had to be at ISB for 7am. Nonetheless, it was great to see so many fresh and excited faces, all raring to get started.
The students had prepared hard for the run and most had been to the two practice sessions during the previous week where we focused on our pacing. Patana were well represented at the event and the training clearly showed as students put in a sterling performance. The race was an individual event and congratulations must go to Ethan Abai Haddon and Taran Muthukumaran who finished second and third respectively. A particular mention should also go to Claudia Denye who was our first girl home finishing sixth.

Primary Test out Harrow's Hoops
Primary Test out Harrow’s Hoops
On Monday afternoon following on from our Basketball Bonanza we travelled to Harrow to play a boys and girls Basketball match taking 9 girls and 12 boys on this occasion. After the long bus ride we looked a little tired until the excitement of the afternoon kicked in and got everybody going again. The boys started proceedings with 4 X 7 minute quarters and I was pleasantly surprised by the way the boys played and were able to sub in and out whilst maintaining some shape to the team. As this was Harrow’s training night they had a large squad which hampered them but our boys still earned their 30-4 victory with a lot of positive play to take forwards. Several players stood out but two boys worked very well in tandem to earn my players of the day and they were Harry Frain 6P and Karatae Uahwatanasakul 6G.
Next up were the girls who had been waiting patiently picking up some tips of what and what not to do from the boys. There game time had to be reduced to 3 X 7 minute thirds as time beat us but everyone got plenty of court time to develop their skills and understanding in a game situation. We started brightly, scoring the first basket but Harrow responded quickly with some determined play to level the score. The game continued in this see saw fashion with us never really getting away from them on the score board. Many of the girls were playing their first competitive game against another school and I was very pleased with the way that they rose to the occasion with my player of the day going to Murielle Kwant 6P. As the hooter sounded the girls were defending like crazy but certainly deserved their 12-10 win.
A very big thank you to Harrow for hosting us and to all of the players and parents who supported our teams during the afternoon.
Next up is our Interclass Basketball next week and our own Invitational Basketball Tournament on Friday 2nd October so keep shooting those hoops in Primary!

Primary “Tip Off” Another Action Packed Sporting Year with a Basketball Bonanza
On Friday 11th September 75 young Patana Basketball stars who had signed up this terms ECA accepted the opportunity to play in our inaugural Basketball Bonanza with 22 boys from Shrewsbury joining us on our back hard courts between 2.45 and 4.30pm. The idea behind the event was that we felt we wanted an inclusive event to kick start our Primary sporting calendar. It certainly ticked all of the right boxes with 8 boys teams involved with no less than 6 from Patana and 3 Patana girl teams testing their skills in a fun and exciting introduction to the competitive game.
All of the squads improved greatly during the afternoon as the children began to make better decisions and gel as teams on the court. It was particularly pleasing to see a lot of first timers picking up the rules and relishing the heat of friendly competitors in such a positive and sporting manner. Special mention should go to the Winyards with Benedict from Year 4 joining the event as an already confident performer and Gregory from Year 8 who took up the challenge of coaching his brother’s team to 3 wins out of 3.
A huge thank you to all of the children who accepted the challenge from Patana and Shrewsbury to play and to the many parents who came to support. Also thank you to Mr. Chris and Miss Gibson who did a sterling job of coaching along with myself during the afternoon.
I hope to see everybody taking the chance to enjoy a little extra practice during their break and lunchtimes on the back hard court!
Mr. Andrew Tatam
Head of Primary Physical Education
