Record Breakers 2009

Year 5 and 6 Excel at their Primary Record Breakers 2009

On Saturday 14^th March the annual Primary Record Breakers Athletics meeting took place during the afternoon on our Back Field, Sports Hall and Hard Court areas. This event normally offers the opportunity for any of our budding young athletes from Year 4, 5 and 6 to challenge themselves over 8 track and field events to challenge their personal best performances and those elusive school Records. Unfortunately our Year 4 athletes were unable to attend this year due to the hand, foot and mouth outbreak. The event proved as popular as ever with 50 children from Year 5 and 6 taking advantage of this opportunity to challenge themselves across a range of track and field events.

All of the athletes performed very well with many achieving personal bests or attempting new events in a competitive situation for the first time. There are a few children who deserve special mention as consistently excellent performers across many or all of the 8 of the track and field events on offer. From Year 5 Angelina Siddons 5A came away with 3 firsts, 3 seconds and 1 New Record, Eva Smiley 5G 2 firsts, 2 seconds and 4 thirds, Olivia Almond 5K 3 firsts and 4 thirds, Taran Muthukumaran 5K 4 firsts, 1 second and 1 New Record and Karatae Uahwatanasakul 5N 2 firsts, 1 second and 2 third place finishes. From Year 6 Peachy Ellis 6H skipped away with 3 firsts, 1 second and 3 New Records, Molly Frain 6H 2 firsts, 4 seconds, 1 third and 1 New Record, David Gist 6B 4 firsts, 1 second, 3 thirds and 3 New Records and Hein Htet MacArthur 6J with 4 firsts, 2 seconds, 1 third place and 2 New Records. Other record breakers on the day were Ciaran O’Kane 5M and Kate Wattanavekin 6B. An incredible 13 School Records fell during the afternoon some of which had stood since 2002 and several of them were broken by several of the competitors in that age group.

I was lucky enough to be present for what was certainly my stand out personal performance of the day which came in the High Jump from Peachy Ellis in the Year 6 competition where she jumped a superb 1.43m a full 21cm higher than the previous record and 7cm higher than her previous personal best height.

A big thank you to the Primary P.E. Team and all of the other teachers and parents who helped during the afternoon as time keepers, event marshals and team leaders. Also a huge well done and congratulations to all of the children who took advantage of this marvelous opportunity to challenge themselves.

Next on the track is the BISAC Track and Field event Saturday 16^th May so keep training!
