Swimming Galas K2, Year 1 and 2

Published Monday, June 14, 2010.

K2 and Key Stage 1 Take the Plunge!

Following the original cancellation of our annual Y1 and Year 2 swimming gala’s they were rescheduled for the following week when the weather threatened to overtime our plans again. Fortunately our K2’s had managed to have their gala on the original date and the weather gave up us just a big enough gap to proceed so that all of our young swimmers got the opportunity to take the plunge.

The K2 swimming gala is always one of my favourite events of the year as it is such a fun, simple yet challenging event where all of the children are active and mostly in the water. The classes arrive at the 25 m pool in groups of 2 or 3 classes and are split into 4 groups who all rotate around 4 exciting activities as diverse as “the stepping stones” and “stroke technique” across the width of the pool.

Our Year 1 and Year 2 galas tend to be far noisier affairs with groups of 3 or 4 classes at a time cheering for their class mates to swim their best. Individual events range from the Doggy Paddle to the Butterfly and are supplemented by many team relays from the Sea Horse to the Life Jacket race. The final events are the ever popular Treasure Hunt where the girls followed by the boys of the class compete to gather as many floating and sinking objects as fast as they can to gain the most items of Treasure.

It was certainly a great pleasure to see how confident our young swimmers are in the water and to watch and cheer their excited and enthusiastic displays. A big thank you to our swim team for their work throughout the year in preparing and encouraging the children and to all of the parents who came to lend their support. Well done to all of our young swimmers for their fantastic efforts during their events too.

A special mention also to Mrs. McLaughlin who was on the microphone for all six of our gala’s who will be sorely missed but fondly remembered at next years events.

Remember to keep swimming during the holidays everyone!

Mr. Andrew Tatam

Head of the Primary Physical Education
