Y5 Readers Cup Year Group Quiz

The tension in the Year 5 shared area this afternoon could be seen, felt and even smelt! Today the winning teams from each class were announced in an afternoon assembly after Mrs. McDevitt finally finished analysing all the Survey Monkey data from yesterday’s quiz. The scores were incredibly close in every class, with 5O and 5A having to take part in an extra bonus round earlier today to break a draw between class teams.

All the teachers are so proud of their classes for all the effort that has gone into reading this term.  Across the Year Group there were children who had read all 12 of the books on the original book list- a fantastic achievement.  Every student has read at least 3 books and helped their team to move closer to the Elite Eight final next week. The Readers Cup has been a true celebration of reading and amazing books.

In the end, it was the following teams from each class that have moved on to the Readers Cup Final:

5A Bookasaurs: Jimmy, Izzy, Te and Oliver

5B The Teds: Jack, Lyla, Nimit, Arthur, Fai

5C Once Apon a Time: Dimitri, Mark, Yunnan, Alison

5G Call of the Wild Books: Lara, Om, Book, Ethan

5H Bookanaires: Ton, Sun, Prin, Louis, Annelies

5K Pupster Readers: Victor, Shonah, Santi, Signe, Riko

5O  MVR: Anya, Nevada, Panu, Ansh

5W Bookworms: Reese, Josephine, Zaina, Abhi

Stay tuned because next week these 8 teams will battle it out over the books in a flashy, game show final.

Year 5 Readers Cup

The annual Year 5 Readers Cup kicked off last term with an assembly led by Mrs. McDevitt and the Year 5 Library councillors. Over 40 teams will be competing for the Readers Cup by reading books, discussing the stories and taking part in a Year group-wide quiz.

The enthusiasm in the Year Group is palpable. The students are really enjoying the competitive aspect in the quest for the Cup. Only one team from each class will advance to the final Elite Eight game-show final; and only one class can will the coveted Readers Cup!

Excitement over the competition is only half of the fun, though. The true thrill of the Readers Cup is getting the chance to read books that they may never have chosen themselves.  

The challenge behind the Readers Cup challenge is to, as a team, read all of the books on a specially chosen list. The 12 books on the 2013 list range in genre from Humorous reads to Historical Fiction stories.  Titles include well-known tales such as Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot, classic stories like Jack London’s Call of the Wild and memorable modern novels like Skellig by David Almond.

The Year 5s have embraced the challenge whole-heartedly. Many of students are reading more than ever and devouring the books at an impressive rate. While each child in a team only needs to read 3 books over the course of the Term, many have already read 5, 6, 7, even 8 of the stories! Dewi, in 5C, sums up the feeling of most of the students by saying: “I am really enjoying the books and have never read so much!”

Welcome to Term 3

Welcome Back Everyone

I hope that you had the chance to do some great reading over the holidays. Do share with us on the blog which books you have enjoyed. We have started the term of celebrating by giving out our awards for the winners of the 'Guess Who is Reading?' Competition. There have been lots of entries from all the year groups; if you haven't seen the photos yet have a look as you walk past the libraries. In the library we are all looking forward to a great term ahead. We'd like to wish  good luck to Year 11 and 13 for their final exams.

Alan Gibbons and Bangkok Book Awards.

What an exciting week we have had in the library. Firstly we are delighted to announce the winning titles of the Bangkok Book Awards.

After a total of 1,205 votes, here are the winners! 

Picture book Award

Winner - The Umbrella Queen by Shirim Yim Bridges (380 votes)

Junior Book Award

As if concluding the Bangkok Book Awards hasn’t been excitement enough enough, we have also had Blue Peter Award winning author Alan Gibbons, in school working with our students. Our children have absolutely loved listening to Alan speak. His charm, humour and wit has left them hungry to read his books. Alan has spoke warmly of many of our favourite authors, including previous visiting authors, Linda Newbery and Bali Rai. Children of all ages have loved listening to his inspiring stories, learning tips about creative writing and have left his sessions with a great desire to read and an understanding that there is definitely something out there for everyone to enjoy. We could ask for nothing more!  

All in all, with our wonderful visit from story teller Clive Pig, great work from our student junior librarians, World Book Day and wonderful reading initiatives and competitions we feel we have had a great term. It is time to have a well earned rest over the Songkran holidays – with a book of course!
