"The Student as the Learner: The Environment as their Vehicle"

Garden International School
Drawing theoretically on Vygotsky and Maliguzzi, this workshop aims to help participants unpack the significance of different environmental elements on the Student as a Learner.

How does the manipulation of the built environment influence the ways learners go about learning? What opportunities exist for inside and outside learning spaces? What possibilities for learning materials exist in these spaces? How do the choices we make about materials, daily rhythms, time allocations for activity, and classroom management facilitate social interaction and collaborative learning? Is there balance in the physical and emotional environment we create for learning?

Glenn James and Jane Vincent from Garden International School will present examples of physical spaces that promote learning from their Early Childhood classrooms in China and Thailand as provocation for discussion of these questions.

Workshop participants should come prepared to share examples, stories and anecdotes from their own contexts. Our aim is for all of us to walk away with some new ideas, possibly new insights and, if not, certainly more self-driving questions.

As physical beings in a 3 dimensional world, we are all affected by the environment. The choices about that environment matter to our learners.

Inspired by the Outsider artist Nek Chand who created "Rock Garden of Chandigarh" and the Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden who worked in collage this presentation will illustrate a way in which a jewelry piece can be designed using discarded materials found in any art classroom such as magazine prints, newspaper cutouts, and discarded cardboard to create a jewelry piece. These pieces will be inspired and in response to listening a Miles Davis jazz piece much like Romare Bearden would do when creating his collages.

The purpose here is asking how can we encourage art students to come up with clever ways to contribute to the idea of reusing and recycling as global participants when creating works of art.

Applying for jobs in International School - what makes a good application

Bangkok Patana School
Mick Smith is Principal of the Secondary School at Bangkok Patana School. In the last 3 years he has interviewed several hundred applicants for positions within the school, both from external applicants and for internal promoted posts. Bangkok Patana like other large, well reputed international schools attracts a large number of applications for teaching positions, as many as one hundred per post. Some applicants are simply unsuitable due to a lack of experience but many others shoot themselves in the foot through a poorly thought out application, supporting letter and curriculum vitae. Similarly once selected for interview a number of candidates although having relevant experience do not perform well in the interview situation.
The purpose of this session is to offer some practical pointers to guide teachers towards producing effective applications for posts and presenting themselves in the best possible light at interview. David Knott the Primary Principal will also join the session.

Co-Learning

Genggwaa
Children (and adults) learn most effectively when they are playing. By following one's innate curiosity and desire for fun and enjoyment, children actually teach themselves far more effectively than a teacher can.

So I would like to propose a new paradigm for education: co-learning. Where the teacher learns along with the child: almost a reversal of roles, because the child will eventually become the master of his/her subject of interest.

The teacher's role then becomes more that of a facilitator and mentor, dealing with bureaucracy and resources; but no longer 'teaches' as such.

Consider that the only education of value that any child acquires at school is usually what he/she does extramurally, NOT what is actually covered during school time.

Almost as a side-effect, an important phenomenon occurs in play-based learning: brain training.

I will propose that the brain is much like a muscle and needs to be trained in the same way as one trains for a physical activity such as sport or dance.

There are fun (and therefore effective) ways of doing this; and I will cover some of the important considerations.

Exercise and the Brain

Thai Chinese International School
Everyone knows that exercise is good for your muscles and bones. But what does exercise do for your brain? In this presentation, you will learn about cutting edge research connecting exercise and learning based on a new book called Spark by Dr. Ratey. In this book, he explains what is happening to your brain when you engage in exercise. He highlights the ways that exercise can help students struggling with ADHD, autism and other disabilities. Inspired by Dr. Ratey's book, I carried out some action research in my first grade classroom. Students were administered a cognitive processing test. A week later, the group was divided into two sections. One section participated in an aerobic activity while the other read books. The two sections were then administered the same cognitive processing test. My presentation will examine the findings and implications of this action research. You will also learn some fun and easy games to play with students that improve their memory and keep them active.

Open Source Cure for Schools' Hard Times

ITeachNet.org
The time has come when even the "rich" schools might be motivated to consider spending their money more carefully .
The world-wide negative outlook for the economy may be just the incentive you need to get you out of that "preferred software" rut to try something new and promising: free and open source software. Often referred to by insiders as FLOSS or FOSS for "Free, Libre, Open Source Software," it refers not to 30-day free trials (freeware) or "try before you buy" shareware, but to software that is free of "purchase" cost and also comes with a license meant to protect your right to copy, share, modify and even sell the software -- as long as you don't restrict the rights of others to do the same.
Amazing? Why would anyone do that? Isn't that insane?
Come find out about this incredibly sane alternative to 'proprietary' software and how it could work for you and your school.

Youth and Community work in International Schools

Bangkok Patana School
This is a chance for those who organise, are involved in or would like ideas for community and youth events to discuss and share experiences and suggestions as well as setting up links between schools for possible future events.

Places on the above sessions are subject to availability. Delegates will be invited to sign up for their chosen sessions in the order in which they registered for the conference. We will try to put on repeats of the more popular sessions so that as many people as possible can attend
