Thai Language and
Culture is a Government requirement and
a subject which adds richness and
enlightenment to the Patana
international school community. The
subject is taught from Year 1 to Year 13
at Patana. The Thai Language and Culture
curriculum develops the subject through
the areas of speaking and listening,
reading, writing, language usage and the
knowledge of Thai culture and society.
In the Primary School,
Thai national children develop their
abilities to listen and tell stories and
express themselves. Children have
opportunities to engage in group and
individual presentations and
discussions. Children are constantly
exposed to a variety of good quality
reading materials and have opportunities
to write in different forms and for
different purposes. These include
stories, letters, lists, captions,
diaries and response to literature.
Non-Thai national students will have
opportunities to learn Thai culture and
Thai as a foreign language with the
emphasis on listening, speaking and
vocabulary development.

In
the Secondary School Thai is taught as a
modern language and can be studied for
UK examinations - Thai IGCSE First
Language- at the age of 16 and taken as
a literature course at Higher and
Standard IB level in Years 12 and 13.
Similar to English, the IB course
exposes the students to a wide range of
world literature and requires skills of
critical analysis and in-depth
understanding of themes, characters and
styles.
At Patana we celebrate
traditional Thai festivals such as Loy
Krathong, Songkran, and the art, music
and dance of the country are reflected
in our curriculum. Visits are also
arranged to give the children direct
experience of the rich culture of
Thailand. Traditional Thai classrooms
are attractive features of our campus
and provide authentic settings for
cultural studies.
