The Loi Krathong Festival

As in international school we embrace children from over fifty different nations around the world. We remain constantly aware that Thailand is our host country and feel that it is extremely important that the school community acknowledges and celebrates major festivals alongside the Thai nation. Loi Krathong offers an excellent opportunity for this to happen.

The pictures on the Loi Krathong Shine+Write page are interactive animations. Parts of the pictures can be dragged with the mouse, TabletPC pen or hand on the Smartboard. here are some maths ideas for different age groups:

Small children:

Count the Krathongs as they are dragged into the river.
If there are four Krathongs on the river, how many more will make the total 10?
Can you float twice as many red as blue? etc...

Medium sized children:

If there are three red and three blue krathongs floating on the river. In how many different ways can they be arranged side by side?

...what if there were four red and four blue krathongs?

...Is there a general rule?

Rather large children (some taller than me)

Some red and blue krathongs are floating on the river. If another red krathong is added to those floating, the probability of randomly choosing a red Krathong changes in such a way that the fraction's numerator and denominator increase by one. How many red and blue Krathongs were originally floating on the water?
