More Patana Life

Mairi Hedderwick, the creator of Katie Morag, is one of
Scotland's best-known and best-loved
author/illustrators.
Mairi was born in Gourock, Scotland. At seventeen she
took a job as a mother’s help on the Isle of Coll in the
Hebrides, beginning a life-long love affair with islands
and their small communities. Her children were brought
up there and now some of her grandchildren. From being
Grannie Island she has now moved on to being Granma
Mainland, but her heart is always on the island. Mairi’s
island world is delightfully reflected in the imaginary
island of Struay where Katie Morag and her family live.
As well as creating children’s books Mairi writes and
illustrates travel books for adults. She is a very
welcome guest here at Patana. The children enjoy meeting
her and she is always accompanied by Katie Morag’s
teddy, which travels with her in a black bag.

Here are some recommendations
children from the Elementary school made in previous
years:
Peter, Year 5 recommends “The BFG” by Roald Dahl: “It is
funny and the words he used are very interesting, so I
like to read it over and over again. I never find it
boring!”
A firm favourite is “The Twits” and Udit in Year 6
recommends it because: “ It is funny and it has good
characters. I love the tricks they play on each other.”
Grace in Year 2 has read Mr Quince’s Garden, commenting:
“There are so many beautiful pictures and it is a funny
book.”
Theo in Year 6 enjoys books that makes her laugh. After
reading “Mistletoe Farm, Six Cousins Together Again”,
she wrote: “It’s funny. “You really do smell,” Jane
remarked. “It’s well written. You feel sad when the
characters are sad or if they’re worried, unhappy, happy
etc.. I also like it because you never know what’s going
to happen.”
“I like Peter Pan because I like Wendy and Tinkerbell.
Also it is a good story. I like the crocodile because he
is green and that’s my favourite colour,” wrote Natasha
in Year 1.
Brandon is also a Peter Pan fan and tells us, “My mum
reads it to me all the time.”
The Goosebumps are still a firm favourite and Satkirath
from Year 3 says: “It is freaky and scary. It freaks you
out and it scares you to death and I like scary and
freaky books!”
Harry Potter wins the prize as the most popular
character. Benjy, Year 5, read Harry Potter and the
Prisoner of Azkaban: “It is really imaginative. I have
read ¾ of it and I can’t wait to finish it so I can move
on to Book 4.”

On World Book Day, Thursday 1st

invited to dress as characters from their
favourite books.
Hermione Granger, Peter Pan, and the Cat in the
Hat are sure to be in attendance but who will
