Blogging

Bangkok Patana School
A weblog (now more commonly known as a blog) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order). Although most early weblogs were manually updated, tools to automate the maintenance of such sites made them accessible to a much larger population, and the use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of "blogging".
Blogs range in scope from individual diaries to news digests. They range in scale from the writings of one occasional author, to the collaboration of a large community of writers. Many weblogs enable visitors to leave public comments, which can lead to a community of readers centered around the blog;

How much do they cost?
Do they need feeding?

Everyone can have one, keep one, teach with one but you don't need to feed one! Come along and meet John, a blogger if ever there were, who will demonstrate how blogs can be used for teaching and learning.

(Ideally participants should bring along a set of photos that they would like to use in their photo gallery, on thumb drive, CD Rom or similar.)
Data logging in Science

Bangkok Patana School
Students who use data logging equipment in science experiments have been observed spending much more time talking about what is happening and hypothesising what is likely to happen next. The fact that they are freed from the task of manually collecting data makes a contribution to this, but it is the immediacy with which the data is transferred to a graph which makes the difference. An added bonus is that pupils develop their ability to interpret graphs in a meaningful context.

Dan will demonstrate the ways in which Patana's Faculty of Science have used this teaching strategy to good effect over the last few years.
Developing Higher Ordered Thinking Skills Through ICT

ICT Coordinator, KIS International School
Many schools are spending hundreds of thousands on technology equipment. But is that equipment being used well in teaching and learning? What are the components of effective computer use? What are the effective pedagogies that fit well with Information Age and technology-rich learning environments where the focus is not on the hardware and software? Improvising with the Internet

Ruamrudee International School
When a desktop or laptop computer is used in conjunction with a television (or two televisions), it creates a less expensive alternative display format (as opposed to using a video projector of some sort) to do and/or support "on-the-fly" lessons. Either directly linking a desktop/laptop to a television (or using an adapter) to allow this transfer of information to what is seen on the computer screen creates an interactive, improvisational classroom learning environment.

Using this format depends on several factors, one of which being the ability of the teacher to constantly remind themselves that improvising at any given time is imperative to show the students the usefulness of this projection of information. Therefore, reminders and familiarity with the internet and search engines are critical to making this method successful in the classroom.
Information n knowledge acquired, facts - 1

Bangkok Patana School
Books or computers? Even in well-stocked libraries, many students head straight for the keyboard rather than going to shelves of books which are age-appropriate and designed to serve their likely needs. Without guidance, these students will often search the Web with more enthusiasm than discrimination. There are times when an Internet search can bring valuable results not obtainable elsewhere, but you must ask the right 'questions'. Gerald will host an "Open House" session in Patana's Resource Centre and help you to search the Internet intelligently and more effectively. If you are up for a challenge you will enjoy this opportunity to tackle one of the quests Gerald has prepared to test your digital searching skills

Just press the 'any' key: Taking Powerpoint One Step Further

Ruamrudee International School
The original goal of this workshop was to introduce a critical method of study designed to encourage students of diverse backgrounds and abilities to think more independently about literature and film. Specifically, the method is meant to help students uncover on their own certain underlying structural strategies within a text and the relationship these strategies might have to thematic content. However, because the workshop relies heavily on a multimedia presentation, complete with video, music, pictures and sound, I believe it provides teachers of all disciplines and levels, as well as administrators with an opportunity to experience an entertaining and effective model of the use of technology in the classroom.

Lubbertus has had a wide range of teaching experience over the last 20 years, teaching and lecturing in UK, Singapore and Thailand. He joined Patana in 1999 as a support teacher and in 2000 became an Early Years ICT Assistant.

Worms, virus's, Trojan's, phising, hackers! You've heard all of these terms a million times, and it is getting harder and harder to keep any system and yourself, safe. Even the best system is vulnerable, look at MasterCard losing 4 million account details in June 2005. Although there are no guarantees that you will always be safe, Lubbertus will show many programs and methods to help keep your HOME computer safer, and your details private, and all of them will be free. However, this is for your home computer only, so please do not try these on your schools intranet. Leave that to the professionals. All of the software Lubbertus will show are free, and each attendee will receive a CD of all the programs.

LEGO Mindstorms 1

New International School of Thailand
As a senior student from the New International School of Thailand, I have been running a robotics club for the past three years, using LEGO Mindstorms kits. There is much to be gained from the use of robotics in IT education. The club is called NITRO or, the "NIST Interschool Tactical Robotics Organization". (the interschool part is still not quite realized, but I needed an extra vowel) As far as I know no school in Thailand has a club like this, and I think it is quite unfortunate.

There is much to be learned from this rapidly expanding area of technology. Through robotics, it has been possible to instill a passion for science (including physics), technology, engineering, math, computer programming and creative problem solving. We run competitions monthly, and I try my very best to introduce robotic construction and programming at a deeper level into the NIST curriculum.

Now I have offered to make a presentation about the use of robotic kits in education. I wish to share the things I have learned with others, who can help take this cause further in our region. This is my first time presenting for educators.

I hope to cover the capabilities of LEGO robotics, the programming aspect (coding environments), robotic activities that are suitable for the classroom, as well as logistical issues such as prices, software/driver issues and storage which may be of interest to educators.

Software for Learning Wind Instruments

iBegin Interactive Software
Most beginning wind instrumentalists have a weekly lesson, practise alone and have no recourse to their teacher until their next lesson.

The illustrated, interactive series of Begin® CDs takes beginning wind instrumentalists from the time that they open their instruments cases to being players of an intermediate standard. iBegin® allows students to practise with their own part or a synthesised full wind band, have recourse to interactive fingering charts and sound examples of notes, so that they can check to see that they're playing the right notes. iBegin® encourages students to practise by being accompanied by its interactive parts and scores, which allows for the tempo to be adjusted without altering the pitch of the music.

Beginners can also use iBegin® as a reference tool, as it contains illustrated instrumental maintenance instructions, basic music theory, basic instructions on how to use the Sibelius® notation program, an interactive fingering chart and interactive scales and arpeggi.

Teachers can use iBegin® to extend their students' learning time beyond the weekly lesson. iBegin® CDs can be used as a teaching tool by any teacher who is a music reader with some computer experience.

During this session Bob will give an overview of the software.

Strategic Leadership of ICT

Cambridge Education
Recently, the UK increasingly recognised the vital role that Leadership plays in the development of schools. The leadership offered in ICT is now acknowledged as being crucial in enabling schools to move forward with a new focus providing both teachers and learners with the opportunities that enable them to make best use of the technology available to them. Chris Thatcher has for many years been a pragmatic but innovative thinker in this area (as both a Principal in the UK and as a leader of the N.A.H.T.). He now works as an International Consultant for Cambridge Education (www.camb-ed.com) a leading provider in the UK of Educational Advice and Guidance and one of the key new companies working closely with Ofsted to develop the schools' inspection model introduced in the UK in September 2005. Cambridge Education are the only organisation inspecting independent schools in the UK.
Chris is based in Bangkok.

Sign up for this session if you are interested in how this new technology can be used with young children.

Here is a quote from one of the teachers in the team "I use the TabletPC in practicaly every Literacy and Numeracy lesson that I teach at present. In particular it is an essential tool during Numeracy. Many of the number ideas we are trying to convey to the children can be explored through the TabletPC in a much more interactive and child centered manner. I was a doubter at first I must admit but now I would like to see the children all have their own tablet to work on in the classroom as there is so much more we can do through this medium."
Technology Progress Reports

Hong Kong Academy
With a rush of enthusiasm amidst visions of reform, technology moved into schools only to be dampened with questions of who, what, when, where and how. Schools moved through phases of too much equipment and too little teacher training, to designing of standards, to integration of technology. Currently many schools are now questioning how standards are being delivered, how to assure that standards are being met, and how to inform parents of technology progress.

Hong Kong Academy has developed a K-8 grade level database model that blends teacher integrator collaboration, integrated curriculum, technology skills based on standards, and archives of samples. This results in a continuously growing archive of digital ideas and an ongoing analysis of teacher/student progress.

Using PowerPoint to Enhance Teaching & Learning

Garden International School
Is powerpoint just a hi-tech version of chalk and talk or can it be used more actively to promote learning?

A discussion forum intended to share good practice in using powerpoint for those who don't have interactive whiteboards. I will show my attempts to enhance the teaching and learning including ideas to make the use of presentations less passive for pupils in History. Areas covered will include starters, assessment for learning and modelling. Bring you own ideas too!

Although my own examples are based on History, it may be of some use to other literacy based subjects such as Geography or English. It will probably be best suited to those teachers who are not excessive users of ICT.

A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order).

A wiki is a collection of interlinked web pages and photos, all of which can be visited and edited by anyone at any time .
