Frequently Asked Parent Questions

Q. What are the telephone numbers for contacting the library?

A. The Primary Library Office telephone number is 02-398-0200 ext 116. The Secondary Library Office telephone number is 02-398-0200 ext 166.

Q. Can I renew my children’s books over the phone.

A. Yes.

Q. When can I use the libraries?

A. You are always welcome in the library before school, at break and lunch time and after school. If you wish to use the library at other times we ask you to kindly use the Parent Section situated at the back of the Primary Library.

Q. Can we use the school wireless?

A. We are very sorry that we can not at the present time offer computing facilities to parents neither on school computers nor wireless access for parents' own devices. The situation is being monitored by the Board's ICT Sub-committee and may change in the future. The True Coffee shop near the front entrance of school offers Internet access. There is one exeption to this rule. Computers situated in the Library may be used by parents for school related purposes (such as accessing the Parents' Gateway) if the computers are available and not being used for other purposes. We are sorry that we can not be more accommodating at this time.

Q. Can my child’s nanny borrow books for them?

A. Yes but please inform us by letter or email that this is something you would like to arrange.

Q. Does the library open during the holidays?

A. Yes, although we complete training and stock taking during the school holidays so it is a good idea to phone before coming to school just in case it is an occasion when we are closed.

A. Yes, we actively encourage you to do this. Please though do read with the children and please don’t use your mobile phones in the library during this time.

Q. If I have reserved a book for my child how will I know it is ready for collection?

A. Your child will be notified in class and by email. If you would like us to email you, to let you know that a book has been returned please ask and we will be happy to.

Q. How long can I borrow the DVDs for?

A. 3 days.

Q. How will I know if my child has overdue books?

A. We will contact you via email. If you don’t reply we will phone you.

Q. How many books can we borrow over the holidays?

A. The rule is 15 books but if you have more than one child we would be happy to extend this to 20 books.

Q. Can I still borrow items if I forget my library card?

A. Yes.

Q. Is the Library ECA fun?

A. Lots of fun. It is always oversubscribed. Also, if you are a member of the ECA it means you can borrow an extra book!

A. Yes you can use them for homework or to do internet research, but you can’t use them to play games or to use your email. The only exception is Grid Club which you are allowed to play educational games on.

Q. Can Secondary students use the Primary computers?

A. No.

Q. Some books such are kept behind the counter such as the Lego books or the Guinness Book of Records. Why is this?

A. We find if we put them on the regular shelves children borrow for a very long time and don’t bring them back so we need to make sure that everyone can read these popular books.

Q. Can we still borrow the Lego books etc to read at home?

A. Yes, but you have to ask your parents to borrow on your behalf.

Q. Can we reserve DVDs?

A. Yes, you can. You are allowed to borrow them for 3 days.

Q. I can never find the Horrid Henry series and the Horrible Science series etc. Where are they?

A. The series of books are all together near the Home Language Books shelf.

Q. Where are the comic books and magazines kept?

A. Towards the back of the library; near the Thailand books.

Q. Sometimes the library catalogue says a book is in the library but it isn’t on the shelves. Why is that and what should I do?

A. Sometimes children put them back in the wrong place. This is why you should always return books you are reading in the library to the brown shelves. Sometimes the book is one of the ones that we have to keep the circulation desk. If ever this happens to you talk to the librarian who will help you find the book.

Q. How long can we keep books for?

A. If you are in Year 1 you can keep for one week. If you are in Year 2-6 you can keep for two weeks. Remember, though, you can only keep DVDs for 3 days.

Q. Can Year 1 and Year 2 students borrow DVDs.

A. No, but your parents can do it for you.

Q. Can I take the books from the New Books Display area.

A. Not straight away. We display them for a week but you are allowed to reserve one of them for the next week. You put your name and class on the check out sheet in the back.

Q. How will I know when the book I have reserved is available?

A. We will send a letter to your class telling you it is available and also email you on your school account.

Q. If someone else has borrowed a book I want how do I reserve it?

A. Ask a librarian to do it for you.

Q. Are we allowed to borrow books from the Secondary Library.

A. Yes, we give you a permission card which means that you can go across and borrow from the Secondary Library.

Q. Can we borrow paper and pens from you and that type of thing for homework?

A. Yes.

Q. I have heard you give keen readers book marks, is this true?

A. Yes.

Q. If I need a tissue can you help.

A. Yes. If you ever need anything just ask the library staff and we are happy to help.

Q. Which toilets should we use?

A. The nearest are in the Year 1 block but you must be quiet and not disturb lessons.

Q. What should I do if I have lost my books?

A. Politely tell the librarian about the lost book. The librarian will then contact your parents and if the book cannot be found they will send a bill to your parents. Once the bill has been paid you will be able to borrow books as usual.
