Who Says that Libraries are Quiet and Uneventful?
Before I began working in the library I was under the delusion that libraries were often quite quiet and perhaps quite uneventful places. How wrong was I and how pleased I am that this is the case: it has been the kind of week where I feel I have the best job in the world! Bali Rai’s visit was amazing!
We would like to thank Bali for his good humour, warm approach and his wonderful ability to inspire our children and motivate them to read and write creatively.
Students photographed with Bali after winning the Bali Rai competition they entered.
Students in Years 5 and 6 had a fantastic Assembly and a great Question and Answer Session with Bali, based on his Soccer Squad books. Year 7 had a very thought provoking session with a pastoral focus, where Bali addressed issues such as bullying and internet safety, using his own books as a springboard for this. This was followed by a series of sessions with Years 9, 10 and 11 where Bali delivered age-appropriate talks all of which went down a storm.
Bali was a natural entertainer and kept the audience captivated.
These lucky students received signed copies of Bali's books after winning the Primary Reading Competition.
Our Senior students also engaged with Bali in a small workshop session, focusing on creative writing. This was a great opportunity for students considering careers in journalism and writing.
A super opportunity to learn how to write creatively.
We feel incredibly privileged to have had such a prestigious writer visit Patana. More information and photographs of Bali’s visit will be available on my library blog. www.patana.ac.th/library. Thanks to everyone who made the visit a success and as always thanks to our students who were a super audience.
The teachers were also fascinated by Bali's tips on creative writing.
We are now excitedly looking forward to Jack Gantos’ visit on the 2nd March. Jack will be working with Years 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8. His first book, Rotten Ralph, was published in 1976. We have the whole series in the Primary Library and they are extremely popular. Having been Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Literature at Emerson College, we can’t wait to see him sharing his short story writing ideas with the children. In 1994, Jack produced his first book in the Jack Henry series, based on Jack’s real life. This series is very popular with upper Primary and KS3 students; again we have all the titles for you to borrow. Jack published his first book of the Joey Pigza Trilogy, which is one of his most critically acclaimed works. I can say from firsthand experience the audio versions of these stories are superb for long car journeys so please do borrow them! In 2001, his book Joey Pigza Loses Control was a Newberry Honor Book.
Following hard on the heels of Jack’s visit is World Book Day on the 3rd March. (This is a great site to visit to find fun reading activities for your children to complete over the half term. http://www.worldbookday.com/.) The Secondary school staff and students will be dressing up on the 3rd as a book character to celebrate World Book day and also to mark the opening of the great new Secondary library. We will do something similar in Primary once our super new library extension is complete. Talking of our library move, things are really moving along now and we are hoping to be in the new library early March. Whilst we are moving sites we will keep the disruption to a minimum. We will keep the library open on the 21st and 22nd February and our students will be allowed and encouraged to borrow extra books. We will then, though need to close the library until the move is complete. We anticipate this only being a few days.
Finally just to let you know that, as promised, we are going ahead with our online Scholastic Book Club again. We were delighted with the speed and efficiency of this service so would encourage you to order from here. The deadline for ordering this term will be 15th March. Just as last time you simply follow the step-by-step instructions explained in the website.
I must stress though that you should put the FULL NAME and CLASS of your child when completing the information and click the DELIVER TO SCHOOL ADDRESS option. Please click here for further details. http://world.clubs-school.scholastic.co.uk/bangkok-patana
! Have a great half term and happy reading.
