Year 8 Connections

Perhaps it doesn't look like it from the photos below, but Year 8 students have been banished to four different islands. This is the start of their Connections project, during which students will work in groups developing their islands and performing tasks designed to improve their thinking, research, group-working and other real-life skills.

Over the next few weeks, each island will be given resources but also challenges that the students will have to navigate using knowledge from different disciplines. Within each island group, every student joined a team responsible for either Island Architecture, Arts and Culture, Media, Sustainable Development, Environment or Economics and Foreign Relations. At the auction, each island bid for assets such as nuclear power, tourism and livestock farming. Over the next two-and-a-half weeks, 100 “project years” will elapse, and students will find out via the Daily Notices how their island is progressing based on the assets they successfully acquired. Along the way, their islands might suffer natural or economic disasters, or perhaps economic or environmental windfalls!

The aim of this Connections project is to reinforce to the students that every decision they make has a series of consequences. Some will be positive, some will be negative. To be successful, their island nation needs to be developed with a real focus on the principles of "sustainability" and "happiness”, aims that are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
