Passing the Torch: Life Insights from Alumni

Tips from Alumni for the Grad’25 cohort

Returning to school is always a memorable experience for the school community and also for the returning alumni. On 10th January, we were delighted to welcome back 12 alumni for an insightful session on their journey from Bangkok Patana to the outside world. It was a pleasure to see former students representing a diverse range of universities from around the globe, including Grad’22 Pim Wongswan (Smith College); Grad’23 alumni – Alexis Loke (Queen Mary University of London), Tund Theerawit (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Hansae Ryu (National University of Singapore), Rada (Sammy) Anuras (Brown University), Hugo Cheng (Cornell University), Luanne Poh (Gap Year – now University of Cambridge) and Grad’24- Ansh  Narula (Gap Year- Thailand), Natalie Hoglund (Columbia & Sciences Po), Elyse Hawson (Pomona College), Lucas Perren (University of British Columbia) and Safeer Hussain (University of Reading).

Our current Year 13 students and their parents engaged with the alumni through panel discussions and one-on-one interactions. The alumni shared their experiences and insights about their journeys from Patana to higher education, inspiring our students to consider their own academic paths. They encouraged students to persevere with the IB saying it provides excellent prep for university life. When asked if there is anything they regret not doing while in school, unanimously they answered, ‘Say yes to everything! Yes to every opportunity that comes your way, no matter how busy you are, find the time and do it!’.

Parents asked about college life, career choices and the challenges that come with transitioning to university. The alumni’s open and candid reflections revealed their emotional maturity, underscoring the vast development that takes place in the first year away from home. This interaction not only enhanced the students’ understanding of what lies ahead but also helped parents feel more connected to their children’s educational experiences.

The alumni were particularly excited about enjoying a bowl of our famous noodles after a morning of engaging discussions. This beloved tradition not only brings back fond memories but also highlights the unique culture that makes Bangkok Patana special. We will look forward to holding the event next year – so get ready Grad’25!
