Emily’s Pathway: A Passion for History

A Political Mind with a Historian’s Heart

When Emily arrived at Bangkok Patana School in Year 10, her days were flipped upside down – literally. “I started during COVID from the US, so my school day was 8.00 pm to 2.00 am,” she laughs, “It was surreal.” But from that unconventional start came one of her most memorable years. “Year 11 was probably the most fun I’ve had. When I finally arrived on campus, everyone was so welcoming – I made friends so quickly. It just felt right.”

Now in Year 13, Emily looks back at a journey that’s been anything but ordinary. With Higher Levels in History, English and Geography, and Standard Levels in Chemistry, Maths and French, her academic interests reflect both depth and diversity. “My HL subjects really link to what I care about—understanding history and how it connects to our world today. I’ve always been drawn to stories, especially historical ones.”

Her love for history began young, rooted in childhood books like Goddess Girls and bedtime stories from her dad. “He was a History major, so instead of fairy tales, he told me stories about wars and real historical events. I kept asking for more.” That early fascination grew into a passion for both the past and its relevance to the present. “History is like reading a book—except it’s real. And now, when I watch the news or look at global politics, I can see how patterns repeat.” That curiosity led Emily to develop an interest in politics, particularly in relation to her own identity. “I’m American, so watching our political landscape evolve—especially recently—has made me more interested in how systems work, and why they fail or succeed.”

As for the future? Emily has decided to pursue History and International Relations and received offers from seven universities: New York University (NYU), UC San Diego, University of Washington, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, University of San Diego and George Washington University — many with scholarship offers. Her top choices? “I just received confirmation from NYU, so I’m looking forward to exploring New York city!”

Beyond academics, Emily has made her mark through service and creativity. She led social media efforts for the Sports Council and contributed to multiple clubs with her digital skills. “I’ve done a lot of social media work, including for ‘Chords for Care,’ where we play music at senior homes or hospitals.” A pianist for over 11 years, she credits music with helping her see the beauty in both discipline and expression. “I didn’t love it at first, but now I see how much it gives back.” Emily also took part in Thomas House, working with children with special needs—an experience she describes as “adorable and eye-opening.” And she’s a former varsity basketball player and avid horseback rider, balancing academics with athleticism and heart.

When asked what she’ll miss most about Patana, the answer is immediate: “Ms Ghoghar, my tutor. I joined her class while still in the US, and she made everything feel okay. My parents love her too. She’s been such a constant.”

Emily’s path is one of curiosity turned conviction, resilience shaped by challenge and a heart led by stories—real and imagined. Wishing you the best for your future Emily!
