English Enrichment ECAs

Learning new skills..

The English Enrichment ECAs (Extra-curriculum activities) are well underway in Block A with a range of engaging offerings for all Year groups! The Spoken Word Poetry ECA has evolved this year to include Year 8 and Year 9 students as advisors to the Year 7s as they work on exploring, creating and performing; the English Creative Space is now open to Years 7 -13 allowing for even more student collaboration and ownership of what students choose to focus on; Books and Cakes, now in its 8th year, starts its year long journey delving into a wide range of texts, engaging students in Year 10-13 on literary topics; while the new English Enrichment ECA of Tournament of the Minds (Year 7-10) challenges students creativity, collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Below are few reflection from students on their experience:

English Creative Space (Year 7-13)

“The English Creative space ECA provides an atmosphere that is both calming and inviting, whilst providing solace to many literary enthusiasts within Patana. Within the ECA, students are able to explore their creative literary endeavours and collaborate with others through writing their own story to discussing literature. Ultimately, this ECA provides an escape from academic stress, by providing a safe and judgment free environment for every individual to express their literary ventures.” Amy Brettell (13S)

Tournaments of the Minds (Year 7-9)

Ethan Choi, Year 8 says, “I really like the spontaneous challenges because it puts you on the spot but gives you the space to think creatively.”

Emily Ho, Year 7 says, “I like meeting new people and it builds my critical thinking skills.”

Poetry Showcase: (Year 7-9)

From Annabelle Ng, Year 8:

“For the Poetry Showcase, you get to write about global issues you’re passionate about, which makes your poem powerful. We can work together as a team to write and practice speaking skills.”

Books and Cakes (Year 10-13)

“Books and Cake exposes you to a wide range of literature whilst maintaining a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. You will be sure to find something that enjoy, but there is no pressure to continue books that you do not like. The discussions are very interesting and they naturally flow in a casual manner.”  says James Tonkin, Year 11

“I enjoy Books and Cakes for its encouragement of critical thinking about global topics, and facilitation of multifaceted discussions regarding contemporary events and controversial opinions.” recalls Roushan Xu, Year 12
