Year 7 History and Thai Collaboration on SDG’s
Peace, justice and strong institutions – SDG #16
Year 7 students have been engaging in a dynamic interdisciplinary project that merges History and Thai studies through the lens of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. In particular, the focus has been on the target of providing a legal identity for all, a theme explored by pairing History with the Thai culture and language.
The History curriculum, which examines the ancient Silk Road’s role in migration, globalisation and the spread of ideas, was paired with the Thai curriculum, which centers on identity. This connection allowed students to explore the issue of statelessness in Thailand, connecting historical migration patterns with contemporary struggles for legal identity. The topic also encouraged students to examine the real-world impact of statelessness and the groups affected by it.
The project exemplified the core values of global citizenship that Bangkok Patana encourages. Students developed a deeper understanding of diversity, inclusivity and empathy while honing academic skills. The project not only provided an educational experience but also highlighted the importance of taking responsibility in fostering a more just and equitable world. To culminate their learning, the students organised and hosted two cultural exhibitions, showcasing the plight of stateless people in Thailand. The exhibitions celebrated the cultural richness of these communities, from clothing and cuisine to language and beliefs, drawing a meaningful connection to the spread of ideas along the Silk Road.
The project was a tremendous success, with students displaying their newfound knowledge and skills. “I enjoyed helping others learn about the diversity of northern Thailand’s hill tribes,” said Preme, 7A. “It was fun discovering new cultural aspects, especially the food!” added Zhou Yi, 7A. “I’m proud of what our group achieved,” reflected Rosie, 7B. The Year 7s truly shone through this initiative, blending learning with real-world application in an impactful way.
