Students Shine Light on E-Waste in Ambitious Global Impact Project
Did You Know? 💻♻️
E-waste, or electronic waste, is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally!
Year 7 students at our school have launched an ambitious initiative centred on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Through their Global Impact project, these young changemakers have delved into the pressing issue of electronic waste, or e-waste, shedding light on its far-reaching environmental and health implications.
Over six weeks, the students blended lessons from Design Technology and Computing to bring their project to life. Beginning with hands-on exploration, they meticulously dismantled everyday electronic items—remote controls, phone chargers, gaming consoles—to uncover the materials within and better understand the complexities of e-waste. Their work extended into the digital realm during ICT classes, where they analysed and presented data drawn from their findings, uncovering sobering insights into the global scale of the e-waste challenge.
Collaboration has been a cornerstone of their efforts. In teams, students channeled their creativity and technical skills to produce an array of presentations, from visually striking posters and infographics to engaging YouTube shorts and thought-provoking podcasts. The Global Impact projects empower students to become active contributors to a sustainable future, aligning their educational experiences with the broader goals of society and offer open-ended context for each student to further develop the values we promote as a school.
The culmination of their efforts is now on display in the school’s Secondary Lounge for the Patana community to experience first-hand. As the students illuminate the path toward a more sustainable future, their work serves as a powerful reminder that the next generation is ready to rise to the challenges of our time.
