The academic programme that Bangkok Patana School offers in Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4) builds upon the skills developed in Key Stage 3. All students are required to follow a two-year programme leading to the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or its international equivalent, the IGCSE, which is tailored for a multi-cultural, multilingual audience and the syllabi are international in outlook, but retain a local relevance. The (I)GCSE helps improve performance by developing skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving, and has been created specifically for an international student body and avoid cultural bias.

The curriculum includes the following subjects: English (Language and Literature), Mathematics, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and a Modern Foreign Language (MFL).  Students select three other subjects, one of which must a Humanities subject (History, Geography, Business Studies or Economics). Most students will therefore obtain 9 or 10 (I)GCSE qualifications.  At Bangkok Patana, Year 10 students have 30 different courses from which to build their (I)GCSE course portfolio.

The curriculum in Years 10 and 11 develops learner knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • Subject content
  • Applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as unfamiliar situations
  • Intellectual enquiry
  • Flexibility and responsiveness to change
  • Working and communicating in English
  • Influencing outcomes
  • Cultural awareness
  • Become more effective as independent learners.

Students can expect to spend between 2-2½ hours per night on Home Learning and they will encounter coursework for some subjects, the marks for which count towards the final grade they receive at the end of the two-year course.

The subjects available to students in Key Stage 4 have been selected with the intention of providing a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum, which provides an excellent foundation for the Senior Studies Programme at Bangkok Patana. This link to the challenges of the IB courses that follow mean that it is vitally important students choose subjects that interest them, think they will enjoy and in which they believe they will be successful.
