Year 7 Lunar New Year Chinese Cultural Activities

Lunar New Year celebrations begin…

Year 7 students are well prepared for the Lunar New Year celebrations, engaging in cultural workshops, including Chinese paper cutting, calligraphy, blue and white porcelain painting and Beijing Opera mask painting.

Students embraced the experience with enthusiasm and curiosity. Sia, 7S enjoyed the Beijing Opera mask painting and had the following reflection, “Designing my own mask was inspiring. Each colour carries cultural meaning: red symbolises courage, white represents evil, and purple stands for justice. It was amazing to see everyone’s unique designs.” Lica, 7S reflected: “It was fascinating to explore how colours reflect personality traits. Watching a video beforehand deepened my understanding.”

Zora, 7A enjoyed Blue and White porcelain painting, “It was a memorable experience because we all learnt some new techniques.”

Brian, 7J attempted calligraphy, “Chinese calligraphy is elegant and requires confidence and patience. The precise strokes make it truly thought-provoking.” Ritsu, 7B found cultural links intriguing, “Having practised Japanese calligraphy, I was inquisitive about the similarities and differences, reinforcing my appreciation for diverse traditions.”

This event provided an immersive cultural experience, allowing students to demonstrate independence in exploring new techniques, empathy in understanding traditions, creativity in artistic expressions, and critical thinking and global citizenship which aligning with our school’s mission to develop inquisitive and confident learners who shape their world.
