‘Passion Project’ in Year 11
What’s a Passion project?
Towards the end of Term 1A, Year 11 cohort gathered in the Senior Studies block for a research session with Mr Murgatroyd and Ms Barton, from the Library, to learn about the research process and find out some tips and tricks to help them along the next part of their educational journey. The session was a mixture of information sharing (great websites and school subscriptions to kickstart and support any research needs, along with how to best use Google with Boolean search terms) and activities as they start to navigate the need for referencing and bibliography skills to go with an increasing need for the ability to plan, organise and locate the information they need to justify their answers to any given question.
Students were given the following task:
Identify a global issue or something in society that needs change, aligning it with a relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal. From there, formulate a research question that explores this issue at a local level, whether it’s about the causes, effects or potential solutions.
Students will plan and conduct research to answer their question and present their findings through a Poster Presentation.
Why is this important?
This project aims to develop essential research skills while providing students with a foundation for future academic work, such as the World Studies Extended Essay (EE) or Reflective Project. Moreover, it helps prepare them for the challenges of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Career-related Programme (IBCP), fostering a deeper understanding of global issues and their local impact.
