Reflections on the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

Bronze and Silver 2024

This past year, our students have once again proven the transformative power of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. As the world’s leading non-academic youth development programme, the Award offers more than just physical challenge—it nurtures independence, resilience and strength of character.

The award ceremony celebrated students who challenged themselves in the Bronze and Silver categories, honouring their courage, commitment and personal growth. We were privileged to welcome Martin Foakes from OrcaNation as our keynote speaker. His words, drawn from his own adventurous experiences, reminded us of the importance of perseverance, leadership and learning through challenge, values that lie at the heart of the Award.

For our Year 10 Bronze participants, the Practice Journey at the Residential tested every ounce of resolve. There were difficult moments, filled with tears and doubt, yet what stood out was not the struggle, but the transformation. By the time of the Qualifying Journey in Khao Yai, the adventurers’ enthusiasm, teamwork and resilience had grown remarkably.

Our Year 11 Silver participants encountered even greater challenges through cycling, trekking and kayaking adventures across Kanchanaburi and Kaeng Krachan. These experiences were not only physically demanding but also provided a welcome interlude from academic pressures.

To our students: your energy and growth have been truly inspiring. Thank you to the parents, teachers, and especially our Outdoor Education Team, Mr P-J Rozario, Mr Gerard Tennant, Khun On and Khun Turbo, whose unwavering support made these journeys possible.

You climbed high, and you brought back lessons that will guide you long after the descent!
