Climbing Expedition in Chiang Mai
Twenty-six students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10, with a passion in climbing, had the fantastic opportunity to extend their skills on a real rock face at one of the premier climbing locations in Thailand – Mae On, Chiang Mai.
On Day 1, students arrived in Chiang Mai in the evening and were met by their hosts and professional instructors from CMRCA (Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Association). The evening gave the opportunity to review climbing, belaying and bouldering skills at CMRCA’s super climbing gym – Progression Vertical – as well as for some team bonding.
Day 2 was the deal breaker – the location was the world-renowned climbing crag/rock face nicknamed ‘Crazy Horse’ (The rock formation at the top looks like a horse’s face!). There were many challenging climbing routes and all students enjoyed testing their skills and talents – could they conquer the rock face and reach the top anchor?? Students also had fun completing a Tyrolean traverse and a free 30m rappel – comfort zones were certainly pushed and a highlight for all. There were stunning views and beautiful rock formations throughout. In the evening, the group camped in tents and enjoyed the a different challenge – one of team camp cooking. Some interesting recipes were concocted!
Day 3 presented more opportunities to build skills and confidence. Some students sought out the toughest climbing routes and learnt how to lead climb. Particular standouts were Poon 10V, Pon 10B, Eva 8W and Anika 9T. All 26 students gained so much from this experience not only in climbing but in personal growth – great job team! Huge thank you to our wonderful hosts CMRCA for their excellent guidance and professionalism. Special thanks to the accompanying staff – Khun On, Khun Turbo, Mr Owen and Mr Rozario. If you are a student and enjoy climbing, please do sign up for the climbing ECA with Coach Tao and Coach Gee.
