Saira’s Pathway: From Gymnastics to Physiotherapy

Balancing Act

When Saira received her offer to study Physiotherapy at the University of Southampton, it felt like the perfect culmination of years of discipline, resilience and passion. “I’ve always been fascinated by how the body moves and recovers,” she says, reflecting on her journey. But long before she set her sights on physiotherapy, she was a gymnast—one who had spent over a decade flipping, tumbling and pushing her limits.

Saira joined school in Foundation Stage 2, but it was in Year 1 that she discovered her love for gymnastics. “I got into the team in Year 3,” she recalls. From then on, gymnastics became a defining part of her life. Training, competitions and victories shaped not only her athletic abilities but also her character. “It taught me discipline, perseverance and how to face my fears,” she says.

Yet, gymnastics also brought its share of setbacks. In the midst of her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award journey, she suffered a ligament injury that forced her to adapt. “I couldn’t complete my Silver Award at first, but we found a way in the end and I was able to complete it,” she explains. It was one of many moments where she learned to push through challenges.

Her academic path mirrored her dedication to sports. Choosing IB subjects like HL Sports Science and Biology was a natural extension of her interests. “I took PE for IGCSE, and I loved learning about anatomy, the heart, the lungs—how everything works together,” she says. It was this deepening understanding that solidified her decision to pursue physiotherapy. “As an athlete, I know firsthand what injuries feel like, and I want to help others recover.”

Saira’s final gymnastics competition – SEASAC ’25, marked the end of an era. “It was emotional,” she admits. But even as she steps away from competitive gymnastics—partly due to a spinal injury—her passion for movement and healing remains. While her university might not have a gymnastics team, she’s determined to stay active and apply everything she’s learned.

Looking back on her 14 years at school, she highlights experiences like being a House captain, Gymnastics Captain and student coaching and overseas competitions as some of her most cherished memories. “I used to be really shy,” she says, “But through leadership roles and gymnastics, I gained confidence and learned to work with people.”

Her journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has been deeply rewarding. From overcoming injuries to topping Thailand for Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards for PE IGCSE despite setbacks, Saira has continuously proven her resilience. Now, as she prepares to step into the world of physiotherapy, she carries with her the lessons of gymnastics—the balance, the strength and the determination to rise after every fall.
