It is my great pleasure to wish you a very warm welcome to the Secondary School. In the pages that follow you will be able to learn about each aspect of the school from our curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4 and Senior Studies, our pastoral system, enormous Extra-Curricular Activities opportunities, our staff and students and the wonderful learning environment that we are able to offer.
If you can arrange a visit to the school, either myself or another member of the Secondary Leadership Team, will be delighted to showcase our extraordinary facilities and show you our students and teachers in action. New families often ask what is special about Patana; they may have worries that the school is larger than they are accustomed to, or wonder how we can be both British and international. They want to know about our teachers, where our students come from and where they go after graduating. Let me address a few of these concerns.
We set, expect and achieve high academic standards with each individual student being challenged to meet their own potential. Although we are large, a great strength of the school is our UK-based pastoral system where each child is part of a tutor group of not more than 22 students overseen by a tutor who is their first and most frequent point of contact in the school. Our teachers are mostly, but not exclusively, UK trained, are extremely highly qualified, relish the professional opportunities that Bangkok Patana provides and stay on average for around five years - enough time to get to know the students extremely well. Each Year group has a Head of Year who fosters excellent communication between school, students and home. We have a strong values-based system that serves to bind our diverse, international student population of around 60 nationalities. We successfully place our graduates in prestigious universities around the world on completion of the rigorous IB programme. Typically, the most popular destinations are the UK, US, Australia, Canada and Singapore.
If you could speak to our Secondary students, they would surely mention the fabulous sports facilities and dedicated coaches who lead them to success in competitions throughout the region. They would comment on the opportunities for growth, fun and independence in the Model United Nations, the International Award for Young People and various community activities. They would speak with pride of their role in school productions, in Patana concerts and the exhibitions of their art work.
If they, like you, were relatively new to Bangkok Patana School they would tell you how welcoming the other students were, how a ‘buddy’ took them under their wing until they knew the ropes and how events such as the Residential Visits and House activities build a real Patana ‘tiger’ spirit amongst our community.
I look forward to welcoming you to the Secondary School in the near future.
