Real-World Learning in Sports Science and Performance

Hands on experience and Expert Insights

Year 12 Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) students have been immersing themselves in dynamic, real-world applications of their studies, transforming theoretical concepts into tangible experiences. Recent field trips to Top Golf and Samrong Ice Rink allowed students to explore principles like Motor Learning, Bernoulli’s Principle, friction and the Magnus Effect firsthand. They were also lucky to have Year 9 student Sophie Farnworth showcase her skating skills, offering a practical demonstration of these concepts in action. Collaborating with the Secondary Physics department, especially through Mr Berry’s engaging experiments, has further enriched our students’ understanding of applied sports physics, connecting classroom theory to real-world athletic applications.

Meanwhile, Year 13 students had the opportunity to attend a workshop led by two of our Academy Heads: Joe Denton (Head of Swim Academy) and Sarah Dullaghan (Head of Dance Academy). The students learned about safe and effective training from theses expert coaches. Joe Denton shared in-depth insights into Micro, Meso and Macro training cycles for high-performing swimmers, whilst Sarah Dullaghan captivated the group with her perspective on the physical and mental demands of being a high-performing dancer, referring to them as “Artistic Athletes.”

These experiences have been invaluable for both Year 12 and Year 13 students, bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical, high-level athletic training.
