Sticky Atoms in Year 5

Sticky Atoms in Year 5

Curious, confident young scientists!

This week in Year 5, our young scientists have been diving back into the world of atomic theory! They started with a revision of ‘sticky atoms’ using a hands-on activity that lets children physically model how elements combine to form compounds like water and methane using magnetic components. This tactile approach deepens their understanding of atomic theory in an engaging and memorable way.

For the first time, students also explored the ‘atom builders’, where they broke down ‘atoms’ into their fundamental parts: protons, neutrons and electrons. This learning experience has given them a solid foundation as they prepare to launch into the Year 6 atomic theory curriculum in Term 1 of the new school year.

They’re curious, confident and well on their way to becoming brilliant scientists—and they can’t wait for what’s next!
