Unleashing the Magic of Words

Year 5 Readers’ Cup Competition

The Readers’ Cup reading competition enables students, teachers and parents to experience and engage with a wide range of texts from authors across the globe. It not only celebrates the joy of reading but also cultivates essential skills that propels students into a world of knowledge and creativity. Discovering new genres, new authors and creating connections through books is a true delight.

However, it is more than a contest. The Readers’ Cup is the start of an amazing adventure, the delights of Tua and the Elephant, epic adventures in The Invention of Hugo Cabret and fact-finding about Rainbows in Space, the competition’s books, aim to ensure every young reader finds a story that captivates their imagination.

The unique aspect of the Readers’ Cup is its team-based structure. Students form teams, working collaboratively to answer questions and conquer their peers in and out of the class. Through healthy competition, we want to instill a passion for reading that will continue long after they leave Bangkok Patana.

One last competition would reveal the team that would receive the 2024 Readers’ Cup. Eight teams made it to the 15th Grand Final, after everyone in Year 5 completed in-class and library-based quizzes. The Theatre witnessed students battle out their knowledge in the multiple-choice round, ask the audience round and the mystery book choice round. After over an hour, and a tense tie-break, a winning team was announced. Well done to 5C’s team, ‘Entourage!’, a huge achievement for them and a well-deserved win.

Congratulations to all the teams who made the final, as well as the rest of the children in Year 5, you are true champions of the literary realm!  Thank you for your enthusiasm throughout the competition. Stay curious and keep reading.
