The Secret Life of Plants

The Secret Life of Plants

Year 1 Plant Explorers

This term, Year 1 are learning all about plants and trees. The big question: Can I recognise different plants and trees? Can I list what a plant needs to grow? Can I name and label parts of a plant?

To launch the topic, the children went on a scavenger hunt across the school grounds. Armed with clipboards and cameras, they searched for 12 common plants and trees growing around our campus. There was lots of excitement as the students spotted familiar favourites — and some more unusual finds! The Cannonball Tree was a real highlight and everyone was fascinated by the Spiked Spiral-flag Ginger.

Back in the classroom, students used their photos to create a display. They worked together to label the parts of different plants, including roots, stems, leaves and petals. It has been fantastic to see how engaged and enthusiastic everyone is about this topic. We are looking forward to lots more hands-on learning as we find out what plants need to grow — and even try growing some of our own!
