Unearthing the Past in Year 4

Did you know? Paleontologists classify dinosaurs by studying their footprints and skeletal remains!

Mr John Burrell, our Secondary Science teacher, visited Primary School to deliver a fascinating assembly on dinosaurs in Thailand to the Year 4 students. He shared incredible adventure stories from his 25 years of traveling to fossil hotspots, bringing the past to life with his firsthand experiences. With a detailed map, he showed the students key locations where dinosaur remains have been discovered.

Students learned how dinosaur names are derived, including the fact that one dinosaur, Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae , is named after HRH Princess Sirindhorn. Adding to the excitement, he shared the technical language used for dinosaurs based on their toe counts—those that walked on three – tridactyl, four – tetradactyl, or even five – pentadactyl toes! Students were in awe to learn that paleontologists identify and classify dinosaur using their footprints and skeletal remains.

It was an inspiring and educational session, leaving the children eager to learn more about Thailand’s prehistoric past.
