Dodging Towards Well-being
SDG of promoting Health and Well-Being
As part of an interdisciplinary project, Year 7 students worked across Maths, PE and Languages to support the Sustainable Development Goal of promoting Health and Well-Being. They measured their fitness and skill levels, then created mathematical models to evaluate their own performance and predict who might win in dodgeball games.
In their Modern Foreign Language (MFL) lessons, students used the language they are learning to talk about their strengths and areas they want to improve. Students in MFL2, who began studying a second language in Year 7 and are mostly beginners in Spanish, Mandarin, French, Japanese, or German, also took part in the project.
They created sentence structures and language models to express their opinions about dodgeball and other physical activities, using a range of adjectives. They reused vocabulary from previous topics and worked on building more developed sentences to justify their views on various sports.
Students presented their data in the style of ‘Top Trumps’ cards. Some also recorded interviews where they talked about which physical activities they do in their free time, what the benefits are, and how they would like to improve.
This interdisciplinary project helped students use sport to strengthen their language skills and understand how we can track data to support a healthy lifestyle.
