Year 9’s Outdoor Eco-Exploration
Bringing Biology to Life
Year 9 Biology students recently participated in a series of enriching outdoor activities designed to deepen their understanding of ecological concepts and foster a connection with nature. The school grounds as well as the Outdoor Classroom provided a dynamic environment for hands-on learning and observation.
Students began with a biodiversity survey within the school grounds, identifying various plant species and learning their scientific names and uses. QR codes attached to some trees provided more information about the significance and applications of certain plants.
In small groups, students sampled organisms from different ecosystems within the Outdoor Classroom, including the pond and grassy areas. Using pond-dipping nets and sweep nets, they collected invertebrates to study their adaptations to the environment, such as camouflage and mimicry. This hands-on approach helps students develop a deeper understanding of ecosystem interactions and the principles of natural selection.
