Learning and correctly pronouncing names is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to build belonging in a school community. A person’s name is deeply connected to their identity, culture and sense of self. When we make the effort to learn and pronounce names accurately, they communicate respect, care and recognition. This helps people feel valued, included, and seen as individuals, strengthening relationships and trust. Correct pronunciation also affirms cultural diversity and creates a more inclusive learning environment. While mistakes may happen, a willingness to listen, practise, and improve demonstrates genuine commitment to every student’s dignity and success. We are all from different linguistic backgrounds so our mouths and tongues need training to wrap around some sounds and tones, but practice makes perfect!

Top Tips for Mastering Names

• Ask the person and actively listen
• Repeat the name back and ask for feedback on pronounciation
• If the name is difficult for you to pronounce, have the person create a voice note for you
• Use their name frequently in conversation
• Create a word association, Eg: “Ray like ray of sunshine”
