What does it take to create new opportunities, build a community and open new frontiers?
On Friday 6th November, Bangkok Patana School parents, students and staff are invited to a special free screening of A Brave Step Forward, a powerful 40-minute documentary that tells the story of three Thai women climbers from three generations whose shared passion helped shape a new chapter for climbing in Thailand.
Set against the dramatic limestone cliffs of Lampang, the film follows women who have often worked behind the scenes as climbers, coaches, organisers and role models. Along the way, they faced setbacks, uncertainty and challenges, yet continued forward with determination and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.
A Brave Step Forward is a story about courage, resilience and leadership. It celebrates the people whose vision and perseverance have helped establish Lampang as a world-class climbing destination, supported by its province and local community, and ready to welcome both Thai and international climbers.
The documentary also highlights the climbing community itself: a diverse network of passionate adventurers united by a love of the sport and a shared commitment to making a positive impact on society and the environment. For families, it offers an insight into climbing as a safe, structured activity that helps young people develop confidence, friendships, self-reliance and a sense of belonging.
Before the feature screening, audiences will also enjoy My Name is Loong Nan, a rare 15-minute short film about the man behind Crazy Horse Buttress. The film shines a light on the red truck driver who has quietly supported one of Thailand’s best-loved climbing destinations for years, helping make it a welcoming place for thousands of climbers from around the world. Screened publicly only once before, it is a fitting companion piece that celebrates the often-unseen people whose contributions make opportunities possible for others.
Together, the two films remind us that progress is rarely the work of a single individual. It is built by communities and by people willing to do important work without seeking recognition.
The premieres also mark another significant milestone: the public opening of the new Lampang climbing area. Development began in 2018 before being delayed by the Covid pandemic. Eight years later, the crag is finally ready to welcome climbers.
There is also a special connection to Bangkok Patana. Khun Gee, instructor for the school’s Climbing team, played an important role in developing the area before relocating to Bangkok during Covid. In many ways, Patana is already part of this story. Bangkok Patana was one of the first schools to really develop climbing as an activity for Primary and Secondary children. In the nascent years, it was hard to find competitive events and indoor climbing venues outside of the school. It is wonderful to see how well the sport has been adopted!
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from the climbers during a question-and-answer session, exploring the challenges, lessons and inspirations behind the film.
