Diversity Digest: International Music Day

By Dave Larking, Secondary Music Teacher and Instrumental Music Coordinator

Diversity Digest is a weekly reflection written by staff from different areas of our school

What would the world be like without music? Music is everywhere. We hear

it in films, games, social media, celebrations, places of worship, concerts,

and most of all, through our headphones!

On 1st October, we celebrated International Music Day under the auspices of UNESCO. It was created in 1975 by the International Music Council, inspired by the violinist Yehudi Menuhin. Its purpose is to use music to encourage peace, friendship, cultural exchange, and understanding in the world. Yehudi Menuhin was a British-American violinist and conductor, widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his time.

Music allows us to share something deeply human without necessarily sharing the same culture or background. It communicates emotions and ideas without a common language. We discover that difference does not divide; it makes music and life more interesting, bringing people together. Music unifies and connects people through concerts, rehearsals and performances. It requires us to listen, respond, adjust, collaborate, and compromise. Music has the power to connect us!

Even though it has passed, to mark International Music Day, perhaps don’t just listen to your favourite music:

  • Listen to something new
  • Listen to music from another culture
  • Listen to each other
