Understanding Meaning Through Making: Lunar New Year in Year 7

By Lin Yu, Curriculum Leader Mandarin and Japanese

On Tuesday 10th February, Year 7 took part in Lunar New Year activities in the World Languages classrooms. For many students, it was a moment where east meets west, as they explored Chinese traditions within our international school community. Students rotated through Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, blue and white porcelain painting and Beijing Opera mask making, learning about the meaning behind each craft as they worked.

“Calligraphy was a particular highlight and I remember writing Fú, which means happiness, and that was the most impressive part for me because I understood what the decoration really meant.” – Vivaan, 7H

“I put my calligraphy upside down on my bedroom door at home and my parents were really proud, which made it even more special.” – Mikayla, 7P

“Paper cutting was the activity I enjoyed most because it needed patience and careful attention to detail.” Jade, 7H

“I liked cutting out zodiac designs and learning how families use them to decorate their homes at New Year.” – Ryan, 7B

“The blue and white porcelain painting stood out to me because I enjoyed being creative and was proud of my finished piece.” – Florence, 7B

“Beijing Opera mask making impressed me most because I could experiment with colours and patterns.” – Griffin, 7O

The event gave Year 7s a hands on and enjoyable introduction to Lunar New Year traditions, bringing cultures together in a simple but meaningful way.
