Community Engagement at Bangkok Patana: Neuroplay

By Jynna Wongswan, 12M

Declared as the health epidemic of the 21st century, stress continues to plague everyone, ranging from overachieving students to hard-working adults. With the ever-growing demands of everyday life, it becomes increasingly more difficult to find time to relax: a problem perpetuated by academic settings with tight deadlines and exceptionally high standards. This is where we believe Neuroplay comes in.

Founded in 2024, Neuroplay aims to distribute fidget and stress-relieving toys to the public by hosting workshops. In the past year, we have led over 40 people through sessions building customisable stress balls. From neurodivergent children to the elderly, our activities are designed to be accessible and simple, allowing everyone to participate.

Our session always begins with creating the highly nostalgic slime using non-toxic materials, then inserting it into a balloon (which participants are highly encouraged to decorate and customise with coloured pens) using a funnel built from a recycled plastic water bottle. Within an hour, everyone becomes equipped with a personalised stress ball.

As they are portable, people are free to keep this stress ball on their person to squeeze whenever they want, providing a release or even a distraction from background noise. In the case of younger children and the elderly, the action of squeezing the stress ball improves dexterity and may even aid in preventing the deterioration of grip strength.

Equipped with these toys, we hope that the calming and relaxation time no longer becomes impossible to find, but is implemented throughout the day.
