Why School Buses Cannot Travel Through Flooded Areas

By Transport Department

Door-to-door transport is important to our families. However, when roads are flooded, the safety of students and staff must take priority. Driving a school bus—or asking a child to walk—through floodwater can create serious risks:

🚸 Student and Staff Safety – Even shallow floodwater can cause a bus to stall or lose control, placing everyone on board at risk.

⚠️ Hidden Hazards – Floodwater may conceal open drains, potholes, debris, strong currents, or electrical hazards, making the route unsafe for vehicles and pedestrians.

🧍 Emergency Evacuation – If a bus becomes stranded, evacuating students and staff safely may be difficult and dangerous.

👉 When a road is flooded, the bus will stop at the nearest safe, accessible location. Parents will be contacted promptly and asked to meet their child there.

🚫 Important: Children should never be asked to walk through floodwater to reach or leave a school bus.

We appreciate families’ understanding and cooperation. These precautions help ensure that every child remains safe during severe weather and difficult road conditions.
