How Does Chocolate Affect Our World?

All about chocolate..

Year 4 students are finding out there is more to chocolate than gooey goodness. Last week, they had an assembly to prepare for their upcoming Entry Point on their Chocolate unit. Year 4 teachers introduced the driving question, ‘How does chocolate affect our world?, and everyone reflected on possible “I wonder…” questions that could guide their learning journey across different subjects. These included What is fair trade? How does climate impact the world of chocolate? What happens when we eat chocolate, how is it digested? Where does chocolate come from? This thoughtful start set the stage for a meaningful and engaging exploration of the unit on chocolate.

On Monday 2nd September, Year 4 launched into their Chocolate Entry Point in true chocotastic style. The day was filled with tactile activities that encouraged curiosity, exploration and teamwork. Students shared ideas about chocolate and its origins before diving into a range of chocolate-inspired challenges. These included hot chocolate science experiments, comparing Aztec recipes with modern-day Milo, mindful blindfolded tastings and even cookie excavations using toothpicks to carefully remove chocolate chips. Creative chocolate play dough sculptures added to the fun, leaving students buzzing with excitement and full of questions about the fascinating world of chocolate.
