Year 7 Investigates Life Below Water

Year 7 Investigates Life Below Water

Exciting Learning lies ahead for the Year 7s.

Year 7 Science students have been working on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, as part of their Global Impact project. During this interdisciplinary project the students look at plastics in the ocean, considering the problem worldwide, as well as here in Thailand and how we can overcome this problem. Over the next two weeks, all of Year 7 will explore what ‘life below water’ looks like in Patana’s very own Outdoor Classroom.

In small groups, students partook in ecological sampling techniques such as pond dipping and using classification keys, identifying which organisms they have found. For some students, this was their first experience of the Outdoor Classroom, and getting a bit muddy at school was a welcome change to a traditional classroom. Once back in the Science lab, they will analyse these water samples under the microscope, to see what microscopic life they can find, as well as to see if microplastics are ending up in freshwater ecosystems. This is linked into the Year 7 Residential to Rayong, where the students will identify the effect of plastics on marine habitats, undertaking a beach clean up to help in being part of the solution. Exciting Learning lies ahead for the Year 7s!
