This term, Year 5 have been studying life cycles, comparing how plants and animals grow, change and reproduce.

Our topic culminated in an exploration at the Outdoor Classroom, where observation skills took centre stage. Armed with curiosity and clipboards, the children became real-life scientists, spotting and identifying living things in their natural habitats.

“Look! A grasshopper!” one student exclaimed. Using scientific knowledge, the students investigated its features (six legs, three body parts, and antennae) and confidently classified it as an insect.

Moments later, another discovery: “We found an egg!” But what kind of egg? Drawing on their understanding of life cycles, the children reasoned that it must belong to either a bird or a reptile because it was hard-shelled.

The highlight of the afternoon? A group of tiny frogs! “They’re so small, they’re baby frogs”. However, after some discussion, the children concluded that they were actually adult frogs, noting their four legs and lack of a tail.

Year 5 have shown that Science isn’t just something we learn in books; it’s something we live, explore, and question.
